Eddie’s Sweet Shop

March 29, 2011 by Feisty Foodie 14 Comments

As I mentioned in my Katsuno post, I knew I wasn’t going to starve by any means because we totally walked over to Eddie’s for ice cream.  I love Eddie’s – everything is made in-house, and the staff is hilarious.  That night, we were served by a young guy who was no more than 20, who flirted mildly with me and told me all about saving his cat from a racoon attack, though the conversation quickly ended when he asked, “Do you watch Jersey Shore?” and I had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing so hard I spit ice cream on him.  He even asked me if I wanted to share an egg cream with him 😉

I decided to try something different this time and ordered a scoop of strawberry, with hot fudge (I can’t not get the housemade hot fudge; it’s thick, fudgey goodness, mmm).  When the cutie asked me if I wanted whipped cream, I gave him the “uh, yeah!!!” look, which made him laugh and return with two cherries for me.  I guess he knew my middle name was excess!  Well, the whipped cream was a little softer that day than it usually is, but the strawberry ice cream was strewn with real strawberry chunks.  I won’t say it was my favorite, but I was glad I tried it, and now know I can happily return to other flavors – like coffee chip, or mint chip, or …

My friend decided to order coffee almond chip, and happily ate all of it along with some of mine when I pushed mine away.  I caught this awesome picture with some of the caramel dripping off the side.  Yum!

Yvo says: Eddie’s is an awesome institution that I fully intend to revisit over and over again, especially now that the hot weather is about to make its reappearance (logic tells me so, not necessarily the way it feels outside).  I love that everything is made in-house, and the inside decor hasn’t changed in I can’t even tell you how many years.  It’s a real trip back in time, complete with a candy counter that makes me so happy to visit any time I’m in the area… Oh, Eddie’s is a favorite of mine.  (I have occasionally lamented the lack of awesome ice cream places in New York like Bi-Rite or Humphry Slocombe, and while they have interesting, unique flavors on a daily basis, can you really blame Eddie’s for sticking to the basics when they do them so damn well?)

Nice… I am originally from Queens and this was our special family place when I was a kid. In fact even years later, we’d go back to Queens for family events and stop by Eddie’s. To this day, nothing in my mind is better, the simplicity of a perfect hot fudge sundae.

It’s very nostalgic even though I don’t remember going there as a child. My sister and I are 8 years apart, and she remembers going in HS, which makes the place more special, the kind you share with your kids and whatnot. Love it 🙂

I didn’t do it, and don’t know how to do it on purpose or undo it in the preset I used for these photos… I need like a week alone with nothing around me so I can read manuals. 😛

oh thank god… I thought you fell in love with that hipstamatic kinda thing where people put fake vignettes on everything!

Actually it’s probably just different tastes, some people like it.

What’s a real vignette though? Like I hold a paper towel tube or something?

And no, just sometimes I get lazy and depending on what I want the end result to be, I just use the same preset on all photos from one place, so they all get the same treatment. This one happens to have minor vignetting (sp?) but it really makes the colors pop (extra saturated, I figured that out, yep) so I use it for these types of shots where less detail is necessary. 🙂

yeah basically. Some are caused by physical blocking from things in front of the lens, and some are caused by poor optics. I feel like lens makers have worked way too hard to get rid of it that it feels silly to add it back in! :p

Wow… sounds like a pretty special place! The caramel dripping off the coffee almond chips looks insanely delicious. Thanks for sharing about this place.

Growing up in NYC, Eddie’s is THE ultimate sweet shoppe! All real ingredients and authenticity for days! Whenever I go there, I feel like I am on set on the Happy Days show. It is really an ice cream parlor treasure!
