A while back, someone on Midtown Lunch mentioned this “Ravioli Fair” cart next to Gloria’s Mexican. There was a lot of back & forth, including Daniel Krieger going there and not liking his sandwich (so he never posted about it), and someone else mentioning how it used to be awesome, and blah, blah, blah, until one of the new Downtown Correspondents went there and raved, positively raved about the lasagna.
Lasagna? I was having a pretty shitty day, if I recall correctly, when I headed over to grab a plate. (I must have been – this many carbs for lunch means I must have decided to treat myself to something yummy to make up for something bad happening during the day. Yes, I can tell how I must have been feeling on any given day just by recalling what I ate, so linked are my feelings to my food. Ahem.)
Anyway, the above platter with so much bread came to $7. Not a bad price, if it’s good, right?
Mmm, saucy, cheesy goodness. I walked up there and walked back quickly on a brisk, cold day, but the tin remained hot to the touch. Also, there was no line, so I just forked over my $7 and he gave me my food (already portioned out and ready to go). My one cringe-worthy moment was when he barehanded bread out of the big bag of bread for me, but I shoved aside the icky feeling from that because, well, let’s face it, it’s food from a cart, and he probably touched the lasagna if/when he made it, too. Whatever.
So, you want to know how the lasagna was. It isn’t as good as my lasagna on a good day, but it’s way better than my average lasagna (I struggle with my ratios, and I don’t make lasagna often enough to have perfected it yet, oops). It totally hit the spot on a cold day, when you just want comforting carby goodness… and I would totally get it again. Nomnomnom. My biggest complaint would just be that it’s not that close to my office, so when it’s snowing or just really cold out, I’m not sure which will win out: my desire to have lovely lasagna or my desire not to freeze any extremities off.
Yvo says: Totally yummy and I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other pastas. This place is making its way into my lunch rotation for when I don’t bring bento. Mmm yummy!!!

I’m the same way on Lasagna making. Sometimes it’s runny. I was just thinking about making some veggie lasagna for my vegetarian friend Alex. Anyway, this does look good and whats wrong with a few carbs at lunch? You walked to get it!

Food is gross at ravioli fair. In edible. A disgrace and a waste of money. We catered thanksgiving and the cooked the turkey with the giblets still in the paper package in the cavity.

Hi there! I’m not sure we are talking about the same Ravioli Fair, the one I mention is a food cart in the Financial District of Manhattan. I’m sorry you had a crappy experience at the Ravioli Fair you mention though! (I know people who have mistakenly done that – not found the giblets in the cavity – but they are not professional caterers, so it’s a much different matter.)
