After a little wandering around my blog, I realized that I’ve been seriously remiss in my infamous wandering&eating tours, done with friends where we just pick 3-5 places and walk around the city, eating one type of food (dumplings, hand pulled noodles, cheesesteaks [ok that’s a different city and involved driving], fried chicken, cupcakes, … I’m sure there are more that I’m just forgetting…). There’s a lot of sharing usually, because it’s simply not reasonable to eat at 5 different places without some sharing… it’s just not.
In any case, I decided to remedy this quickly with a practice tour with Dessert Zombie – sandwiches!!! Actually, he picked both places. I happily agreed and we started at No. 7 Sub.
He chose the No. 7 club, the namesake sandwich. This was really good – with potato chips in it! – along with turkey, ham, jalapeno mayo, tomatoes, barbecue potato chips, and pico de lettuce. Despite being a rather large sandwich, there was enough moisture to make it a good, hefty bite… and I liked the very slight kick in each bite. The crunch from the chips was also a great counterpoint to the overall sandwich… I REALLY enjoyed my half of this sandwich.
I chose the Godfather II. Funny story? I asked the guy “Is the Godfather II the best one?” and he immediately said yes, of course, and I said “funny, I’ve only ever heard that Godfather III is terrible, but never heard anyone say II is better than I” – and he said oh… he thought I was talking about the sandwich! Apparently it’s named II because there is already a sandwich out there called the Godfather – actually, there are a LOT of sandwiches called the Godfather, and I’ve eaten a good handful of them…
In any case, this one had sweet potato, salami, Mexican chorizo, ham, muenster, pickled jalapenos and Thai basil. Yep – that giant slice of orange in the cross section photo above? it’s sweet potato. Neither Dessert Zombie nor I are particularly fond of sweet potato, so I was pretty taken aback by just how much there was. I will say that it added an interesting texture and a little sweetness to the otherwise salty-spicy sandwich, and while the overall taste of the sandwich was good… it didn’t hold a candle to the club, in both our opinions. Good – but not great. I wished the Mexican chorizo had a little more pop to it; it was fairly muted.
Each sandwich clocked in at $13 + tax, which is also a bit ridiculous. Was it a lot of food – and quality ingredients? Yes. But I would not go out of my way to return – though I wouldn’t turn it down if someone wanted to go there. There are definitely other sandwiches on the menu I want to try…

I’d replace the sweet potato for fried eggs and leafy veggies instead. The chorizo was very good. But the sandwich definitely wasn’t better than the no. 7 sub.

Ooh, fried egg on a sandwich… you’re giving me an idea!

I want to make the #7 for the family’s lunches tomorrow – so yummy looking/sounding – have all the ingredients, but what exactly is pico de lettuce?
I laughed at your conversation on the 2nd sandwich. Funny. Some people have no sense of humor. giggle

Haha, I have no idea what pico de lettuce is…. I assumed pico de gallo with lettuce instead of tomatoes.
Ooh, I found a recipe: http://www.nytimes.com/recipes/1014494/pico-de-lettuce.html There you go 🙂
A lot of people don’t seem to get my sense of humor, sadly!

How large are these subs? Would eating a whole in one sitting be too much?
Feisty Foodie says
No, DZ and I basically ate a whole sandwich (half of each) and I wasn’t bursting full. I could have easily eaten just half and been satisfied/full enough, though.

Good serving size. Not overwhelming.
No more sweet potato in my sandwich though. Ha.
