FeistyMom’s got jokes… thus the title of this post. My mother is one of the most important people in my life. We don’t always see eye to eye on things, and I’m probably a little too similar to my father for her tastes sometimes – ie, super stubborn, talks too much, and a bit, well, I can insert my choice of adjectives there but as I said, I talk too much and she would probably not like me to share too much here 😉 In any case, I talk a lot about my father here – but I never really talk about FeistyMom! (Probably her preference, actually…) I decided we should go out for Valentine’s Day, but due to her restrictive schedule, she was only available February 13th, known colloquially as Mistress Day. I took her to Sushi Yasu – my current favorite sushi place – but didn’t realize they’ve either reduced their menu or I don’t know, because there wasn’t cooked food on there like I thought they’d added. I had to think quick (FeistyMom isn’t a big fan of raw fish) but I figured out a platter that made her happy – caterpillar roll (eel cucumber roll wrapped in avocado), Marilyn Monroll for me that she was only so-so on, Yellowstone Roll (fried fish that she really enjoyed), rainbow roll that she had a piece or two.
While we were eating, though, I casually mentioned to her that this was known as Mistress Day and explained why. Without missing a beat, my mother fixed me with a look and said, “I guess that makes me your mistress” and then CACKLED for a good 30 seconds. Now, if you’ve ever met me and had the pleasure of hearing me giggle loudly or even when I can’t stop laughing loudly – I am a loud girl and I laugh loudly when I get going… this tiny woman laughs louder than I do. Yes, she does. And she did this in a restaurant I visit frequently while I just sat there, staring at her, dumbfounded. Thanks Mom!!!

Then we had dessert. Black sesame tofu with green tea syrup; I really didn’t like my first bite because it was grainy, but the rest of it oddly was not grainy at all. I enjoyed it greatly, while FeistyMom refused to eat beyond the first bite. Creamy, with a hint of black sesame flavor, then the slightly bitter, slightly sweet green tea syrup… I enjoyed this. A little crunchy texture would have been nice – maybe sprinkled with some black sesame tuile or some such – but otherwise, a great unique dessert, small and sweet to end a great meal. I want sushi right now…

Cool date with FeistyMom.
I want some catepillar!!!
And I thought it was Desperation Day. “February 13th, a magical night, where a 10 has the self esteem of a 4, and the depraved enthusiasm of a 2…”

Hmm, I thought you were going to take her to Danny Brown.

Turns out they are closed on Mondays… I was pretty annoyed when I realized I misread the website, haha.

What about GAL-entine’s Day?!
Cute date with your mom though! And totally something my mother would also find hysterical!

Haha! I’ve never heard GAL-entine’s Day, but I might try that if I’m still single next V-day 🙂

You didn’t hear TT make fun of me countless times for it this year?? It was on Parks and Rec… Feb 13th is for you to celebrate your friendship with your girlfriends. So, obviously, my sis organized a dinner for all the girls immediately after watching the ep with a “secret cupid” (yankee swap) and all! It was super fun and should definitely be a new tradition.

Oh I do remember it on Parks & Rec! Hahaha. I think I’ll do that anyway next year then… great idea!
