After the MomTrends event, FeistySis was still hungry… Since she rarely ever gets out to the city to hang out anymore (product of working in LI, living in LI, and having two kids!), I suggested we walk over a few blocks to Hill Country BBQ. However, on the walk over, she decided she’d rather go across the street from Hill Country and hit up Hog Pit NYC. Since I’d never been, I thought heck, why not? It sounded interesting, and looked like a dive/biker bar, and I’m cool with that…
FeistySis had never had fried pickles before, so when I saw it on the menu, I knew we had to order it. These were surprisingly good- super crunchy on the outside, with a nice pickle on the inside. The dipping sauce didn’t detract but it didn’t add too much either. Just be careful- if you get these here, they come to the table super piping hot. I burned myself a little bit from being too eager to bite into one!
FeistySis went with a half rack of ribs, fried okra and collard greens. The ribs were on the tender side, falling off the bone meaty, though a bit saucy. If you don’t like saucy ribs/BBQ, then you may not like these. I like sauce, so that didn’t bother me much, though FeistySis liked it slightly less than I did. The fried okra was pretty tasty, and the collards were cooked properly. She seemed to really like the food overall.
I opted for the pulled pork, green beans and sweet potato fries – which the menu listed as coming with raspberry ketchup. The sweet potato fries were actually really good – I’m not that big on sweet potatoes in general, but these were crisp and salty-sweet. The raspberry ketchup didn’t exhibit much raspberry flavor, but it had a nice rounded taste – not too vinegary, not too sweet. The green beans were cooked tender-crisp, crunchy and not overcooked at all, which was nice (a lot of non-Asian places overcook their green beans for my taste), but they were a bit oily.
The pulled pork was sauced lightly, tender and moist. I enjoyed it, though I couldn’t say this was the best pulled pork I’ve ever had. I don’t know who deserves that title… since I make pulled pork at home, I find it hard to say whose is the best.
A close up shot – very blurry. It was really dark in there.
Yvo says: FeistySis and I had a good time; the service was very attentive and friendly, and while the place was super dive-bar-like, our prissy selves (I’m prissy; she’s prissier) didn’t seem to mind and we enjoyed just chilling in the booth and chatting. Haven’t done that in a while. The place never got super crowded – it seemed like more people were there to hang out and drink than to eat – but that worked out fine for our needs. And we had leftovers to take home after we were stuffed to the gills, too – and the price was reasonable. Good place to go to hang out, especially if you don’t want to deal with Hill Country’s shtick, or their prices… or their crowds.

I went once or twice when they used to be in the Meatpacking District. That location was truly divey, not just made to look divey.
Gotta check this location out as it seems to have better than average bbq.
when will we see a frickles food crawl?

Stop blowing spots, shhh about frickles frolicking 😉
Someone asked me if they actually smoke their ‘cue here. I don’t know. It tasted good. I didn’t ask if they have their own smoker. So it MIGHT not be BBQ technically.

Mmm saucy ribs. Drools.

In that first pic, it looks like you have way more fries than anything else. I would have been pissed but subsequent pics make the world okay again.

Blurry pics aside, it was a healthy amount of sweet potato fries but also a good mound of meat 🙂
