One recent Sunday, BF and I took a walk over to Austin Street in Forest Hills for brunch. We stumbled upon this place boasting a brunch special for $14.95 with two drinks, so we went inside and were seated quickly.
The menu was fairly standard, and we both quickly spotted items we like for brunch.
He of course opted to order the banana stuffed French toast, which was actually a croissant that had been ‘French toasted’ – BF wished there was a bit more syrup and that the overall hadn’t been as bland as it was. He did say that it was sufficient, but that he’d had better but would come back. The location is pretty convenient, as you can imagine.
My brunch standard of Eggs Benedict but with smoked salmon – the potatoes were pretty good, and there was no skimping on the salmon. However, the Hollandaise was a bit weak – I’d have liked a bit more oomph, a bit more lemony tang to the sauce. And a touch more; not swimming in it, but a good amount would have been nice, dip some of my potatoes in there.
The most unfortunate part about this? Not every place perfectly poaches their eggs. These eggs were poached to exactly my preference of done-ness – look at that glorious yolk oozing out! (Yes, I eat my yolks raw like so!) SO GOOD. But the Hollandaise paled in comparison; it jsut didn’t have that lemony tang I really enjoy in my Hollandaise. Oh well, maybe next time it will be better? There will definitely be a next time, considering its proximity to where I live and the price being fairly reasonable.
Yvo says: Everything was good enough that I would go back for brunch on a Sunday, it wasn’t packed either which was nice (sometimes the places along Austin Street get so packed, I just want to go home and curl up in a ball). A bright, airy space, and if you’re into beer, I’m under the impression they have a decent beer selection. Yummy. New brunch spot for me, perhaps…

Cool. I don’t jump on Eggs Benedict but do enjoy egg yolks raw/ sunny-side up. Too bad about the Hollandaise sauce.

I agree with you about preferring more lemony zip in your Hollandaise. And how much do I LURVE eggs Benedict?? I have to have it whenever it’s on the menu, which I’m sure makes me seem boring to my brunch companions, but a well-poached egg with a silky oozy yolk simply can’t be beat.
