Veniero’s

March 2, 2010 by Feisty Foodie 2 Comments

A brief search of my blog tells me I mention Veniero’s quite a bit, but have never fully posted about it.  This actually falls in line with my personality – when I really like something, I tend to want to keep it to myself.  Okay, honestly, Veniero’s enjoys enough tourism and popularity with or without my positive endorsement, but when I’ve been asked in the past where my favorite tiramisu is – being my 2nd favorite dessert in the world – I always answer enthusiastically, “Veniero’s, but you have to get the tiramisu cup and not the slices.  Their tiramisu slices have chocolate chips in them and CAKE, which ruins the whole thing.  The little cups are just fluffy cups of slightly sweet mascarpone and lady fingers and OMG to die for delicious.”

Well… I’m sad to post this now.  First, what my friends had.

It was a night of non-drinking as I’m trying to get on the wagon here, so we opted for dessert at Veniero’s post-Friday-dinner instead of a wine bar per usual.  HB really likes fruit tarts and so ordered one; she seemed happy enough with her choice.

AB ordered the bowl of fruit with whipped cream, and really seemed to enjoy hers.

We’d all remarked how they’d changed their menu up a bit, but I confidently placed my order “tiramisu cup, please” per usual.  This item had never been on the menu before (you just ordered; they ran out frequently) but it now was.  Then the above was placed in front of me.  “Um, excuse me,” I politely interjected.  “I ordered the tiramisu cup.”  The waiter turned to me and said, “That is the tiramisu cup, we just, um, call it a cup,” and walked away.  No, you really don’t just call it a cup; it used to come in a small plastic ‘cup’ (like a soup cup isn’t really a cup).  Fine.  I’ll give it a try anyway.  How bad could it be?

Well, friends, I wound up eating a couple of bites, then scraping the top thick fudgy layer off, and eating just that (I felt like eating chocolate.  I’ll leave it to you to interpret that statement).  I left about half of it on my plate, and my friends sadly frowned at me, “Not good, huh?”

No.  Not good at all.

Veniero’s, if you’re reading, please switch your recipe back to the old one.  In the cup.  It was my favorite tiramisu on the planet and I am very sad now.  (Granted, it was probably equal to a cup of slightly sweetened mascarpone with very little else in there, but it was delicious.)

Yvo says: I love going to Veniero’s for a nightcap, quick bite of dessert with some caffeine… My friends and I go there pretty frequently.  The place is near where I usually hang out, it’s reasonably priced, and it’s really big, so even if there’s a wait, it usually moves pretty fast.  But I’m really, really disappointed that they changed the tiramisu recipe.  Please change it back!!!
recommended… but that tiramisu “cup” has got to go!

The Tiramisu looked so good though! Ah well, there’s always a bowl of whipped cream!

Oh yea. I’ve had their tiramisu a number of times and it was not good. 🙁 Yet I keep ordering it!!!

I know of a place in astoria that has amazing tiramisu, my FAVORITE place. It’s a little bit on the more expensive side but it’s at a cafe called Athens. Have you ever been there?
