Double Play Cafe (Pittsburgh)

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast at our bed&breakfast, we decided to wander around various districts in Pittsburgh.  A quick bit of searching found us in the South Side district, because I realized it was mostly an outdoors shopping strip, and… I didn’t tell you?  We had Keywee with us.  Our first road trip with my dog.  (His is still too young to bring in the car for such a long ride… she was remarkably good, we put her bed in the backseat but she mostly chose to sleep on my lap.  I think she was confused initially as to what was going on and where we were taking her.) 

In any case, as we walked away from where we’d parked towards the main hubbub, I saw this sign and thought, “We’re on vacation, why not?”

You see, BF and I have a history of going on vacation and Walking Drunk.  Meaning, we grab a drink at one place, down it, then keep walking till we come across the next place.  (This isn’t done in NYC for a lot of reasons, one of them being if you pick the right block, every place is a bar, so you’d easily hit 8 bars in one block, and be in the hospital after two-three blocks.) 

So BF went inside and grabbed two Long Island Iced Teas while I waited outside with Keywee.  There were a few tables outside (literally, two) for enjoying your drink in the pretty warm weather. 

We also requested a cup of water for the dog; I was amused by the cup bearing a Penguins logo.  Pittsburgh is serious about their sports; football and hockey.  What?  They have a baseball team, too?  You never would have guessed by the lack of love we saw displayed for them throughout town…

Okay, coming from NYC as I do, $4 for a LI Iced Tea is pretty ridiculously cheap.  I don’t believe I’ve ever ordered one of these (though I’ve drank them before, of course), but I’m pretty sure that it clocks in as one of the more expensive drinks because of the alcoholic content being so high. 

And… this was the best rendition I’d had.  It tasted like iced tea, for real, without adding any iced tea.  It packed a good punch – I was pretty toasty after just one – without tasting like it would hurt later. 

If only I didn’t have to drive 7-8 hours from Long Island to get it…

Yvo says: Dude, cheap alcohol, friendly staff.  Not sure how packed it gets at night because, duh, I’m not from the area, but I liked the vibe I got from the bartender – yes it was completely empty but it was like 2 pm on a Friday! – and it looked like a fun sports bar, if you’re into the Steelers and the Penguins.  Ironic that it’s named after a baseball term…
