Holiday Potluck #1

January 6, 2009 by Feisty Foodie 4 Comments

This year, the first potluck I attended was thrown by my “group” at work.  Not our entire working group, but our more immediate group of 6 women.  We planned it for the last Friday of the year that everyone would be in, and everyone brought in something.  Well, sort of, but you’ll see.

You’re going to see, if you look hard enough, in the edges of most pictures, damning evidence about my office and my office persona.  See the Mets tickets purchase printout below the bowl?  Haha, I took this picture on my desk.  It’s a bowl of nibbles – dark chocolate covered pretzels, banana chips, dried cherries, dried apricots, honey roasted cashews, almonds, smoked almonds, chocolate covered sunflower seeds – all sorts of yumminess that I just tossed together really quickly.

The mommas setting up.  (Ok, they’re not really all mommas, but they call me the baby of the group, so it works!)  I figure no one can be too mad about this picture, no one’s face is showing, anyway 🙂

Fruit salad from the cafeteria downstairs

The full spread, sort of

Homemade pernil… my coworker made this herself, and it was delicious, succulent, soft, and just… yum!  She shared with me her recipe, but I haven’t had a chance to test it out (the link there is just so you know what it is; I’m not testifying to that recipe’s yum-factor, sorry…).  Mmmmmmmm, so good… fatty… yum.

Another coworker made arroz con gandules or rice with pigeon peas.

I made bacon fried rice (with some alterations to that recipe – frozen veggies, scrambled egg, splash of soy sauce).  This was gone in a matter of minutes – I was told that you don’t need to make that much of anything to bring to a potluck, but I guess I was wrong… oops!

One more coworker brought fried chicken (from Popeye’s), both spicy and non-spicy.

The final coworker brought salads and fixins for the salads as well.  These went largely untouched, hehe.

One last glory shot.

My plate loaded with goodies.  Sooooo yummy.  As you can see, I didn’t take much of my own bacon fried rice: while it was delicious, I can make it anytime, so why bother?

What, you didn’t think we went without dessert, did you?  Cupcakes from a bakery up by Park & 60th somewhere, not sure exactly (I didn’t bring these, obviously).

It was one of the girl’s birthdays (well, the following Tuesday, but not everyone would be in) so we surprised her with red velvet cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine (coincidentally, she’s the one who brought in the other cupcakes, not knowing we’d be doing this, of course).

All in all, I’d say a very successful potluck, I would say.  Delicious food, good fun, and happy people.  What more could you want from a potluck?  🙂

HAPPY EATING~!!!

So sad, the one thing I miss out on by not working at an office is the holiday parties and birthday parties. So much good food I miss!

Popeye’s fried chicken rules for potluck. No mess, no fuss and almost always a guarantee of good eats. Pass the skin, leave the rest. (I kid…)

Everything looks great – except the cupcakes with .. wrapped? .. candy on them. If I were there, I’d be mad, because a certain amount of frosting would be stuck to the wrapper, and because I’d be in public, I couldn’t lick it off the wrapper to save it. Haha.
