This place sucked.
Most restaurants close during in-between times; coming from NYC where things stay open even when they’re empty (well, it’s rare for any given place to be completely empty, really), we were hungry at an off-time between lunch and dinner, just wanted something to nosh on and found nothing open. We wandered into a frighteningly touristy place called Florida City Deli (the name of the street is Florida), and should have been warned off by the pictures of American food everywhere, but our hunger took over our minds and we ordered anyway.
Thinking it a national treasure, well, how can you go wrong with empanadas? Easy, too simple to mess it up, just use crappy stuffings.
True to its tourist nature, our meal wasn’t quite cheap; our steak dinner that night was by far cheaper and tastier. Ah well.
***The empanadas were filled with dry chicken, ground beef with olives and hard boiled eggs – that one was alright but very pungent with olives, so you must like olives, ham and mozzarella cheese. Not very good in any of our opinions, but at least it got us through the next few hours of shopping.
The cookies served with our check, however, were very tasty and schmeared with a bit of strawberry jelly, and the big screen TV in the corner was playing Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in English with Spanish subtitles, so we hung out for a little bit.
The only other people in the entire place were also American tourists.
Lessons learned!
