The girls get together every Friday for dinner, drinks, whatever to blow off steam after a long work week, and on this particular day, Bosie Tea was chosen as the location. Though the place was empty when we arrived and never filled up, the pastry case was lit up and welcoming. Service was attentive and friendly, and we were never ignored. The menus were scattered with tea-related quotes. I thought this one was particularly cute. “Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cozy, doesn’t try it on.” Of course, in today’s day and [...]
Feisty Mom’s Birthday!

My brother introduced my mother to halal street meat a while back, somewhere along the way. He works near the Famous Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th, and took to bringing home a platter for my mother every once in a while after work… so when her birthday came up recently, she requested this for dinner. Well… okay. I admit that I thought I liked street meat until I attended Street Meat Palooza 3, where I overwhelmed my palate with so many different spices and types of street meat, I haven’t eaten street meat since then. I was a little [...]

New Year’s Eve means different things to different people. For some, it’s not New Year’s Eve if it’s not spent in Times Square. For others, nothing is more horrific than spending December 31st with a huge group of drunken strangers in the bitter cold or in a club/bar. Count me among the latter; I vastly prefer socializing in smaller, more intimate gatherings, and I’m also A-OK with spending time alone. Which is how I rang in 2011 … with a lime pound cake. I happened to have a bottle of organic lime juice (yes, a bottle! It’s actually pretty decent- [...]

I’ve mentioned Blue Smoke in the past with regard to Citi Field – their stand there used to have really delicious chipotle wings that they’ve since removed from the menu (yes I’m still bitter). But I’d never visited the actual restaurant, and wanted to, so I grabbed three friends and headed over there. Which 3 friends? Actually, the three friends I have that have never said “No, that’s too much food, we shouldn’t order so much” to me… I know these are not clear pictures – sorry! We started with housemade BBQ potato chips, served with a side of… blue [...]
Martha’s Country Bakery – Strawberry Shortcake

Recently, talking about strawberry shortcake, Esther pointed me to Martha’s. I’ve written about Martha’s a few times; while I don’t like their cupcakes all that much, my best friend loves them… my boyfriend likes their fruit tarts quite a bit and I love their cookies. So when Esther told me that their strawberry shortcake is really good, I headed over and snagged a slice. Doesn’t it look GOOD?Esther had mentioned the use of strawberry preserves, and I was eager for that. Unfortunately, as I’d been given the very pretty end slice, there was way more whipped cream at one end [...]
