Francois Payard Bakery

After Minetta Tavern, TC and I bid farewell to Hungry and headed on our way.  It was the Friday of MLK weekend, and I was going on a road trip for the weekend, so I wanted to go get snacks for the car ride.  We wandered around and hit up a few bakeries – first Dominique Ansel, then Francois Payard Bakery… TC went for the opera cake.  I tried a bite and it was super fudgey, and pretty good.  I think TC liked it a lot.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo, but I also got a chocolate almond croissant.  [...]

Dominique Ansel Bakery

After a long day touring the Financial District (Bodies, WTC Memorial, Irish Hunger Memorial, Battery Park, and all sorts of fun things – I give a great informational/historical tour of the Downtown area!), DLS and I walked up through Nolita to meet StB and C2 for dinner.  Along the way, though, I suddenly noticed a sign and thought – holy we’re outside Dominique Ansel! so I insisted we go in and have a small bite.  Because Dominique Ansel was the executive pastry chef when I went to Daniel and I dream about those madeleines… I dream about them.  DLS looked [...]

Bosie Tea Parlor

The girls get together every Friday for dinner, drinks, whatever to blow off steam after a long work week, and on this particular day, Bosie Tea was chosen as the location. Though the place was empty when we arrived and never filled up, the pastry case was lit up and welcoming. Service was attentive and friendly, and we were never ignored. The menus were scattered with tea-related quotes. I thought this one was particularly cute. “Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cozy, doesn’t try it on.” Of course, in today’s day and [...]

My brother introduced my mother to halal street meat a while back, somewhere along the way.  He works near the Famous Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th, and took to bringing home a platter for my mother every once in a while after work… so when her birthday came up recently, she requested this for dinner.  Well… okay.  I admit that I thought I liked street meat until I attended Street Meat Palooza 3, where I overwhelmed my palate with so many different spices and types of street meat, I haven’t eaten street meat since then.  I was a little [...]

Sour Cream Lime Pound Cake

New Year’s Eve means different things to different people.  For some, it’s not New Year’s Eve if it’s not spent in Times Square.  For others, nothing is more horrific than spending December 31st with a huge group of drunken strangers in the bitter cold or in a club/bar.  Count me among the latter; I vastly prefer socializing in smaller, more intimate gatherings, and I’m also A-OK with spending time alone. Which is how I rang in 2011 … with a lime pound cake.  I happened to have a bottle of organic lime juice (yes, a bottle! It’s actually pretty decent- [...]
