Battle of the Banh Mi!

I’ve mentioned a few times before that I am an active member of the Midtown Lunch forums.  I actually used to be even more active, when I had a job that required I sit in front of a computer for 7 hours a day, but that’s another story.  In any case, when this topic popped up – a banh mi blind tasting! – I jumped on the opportunity.  An event that someone else organized (and very well, I might add – every last detail was considered!) and all I had to do was pick up a sandwich and attend, then [...]

Paris Sandwich – New Combo

I recently went back to Paris to grab lunch and discovered, happily, a $5 combo they now offer.  $5 gets you a green tea waffle, a coffee or tea (I think it’s milk-tea or the Asian coffee thing, which is great), and a smaller banh mi, chosen from the same selection.  The green tea waffle has a very subtle green tea flavor, but has some crisp, chewy parts that are great, and other parts that fall flat.  Overall, not bad for a green tea waffle (these usually are $1 by themselves).  It’s a slightly sweet treat to go with your [...]

Baoguette

Being a frequent patron and supporter of the banh mi cart, I admit I was interested and a bit disturbed by the news of Baoguette opening nearby.  Sure it would be great to finally try Baoguette – which has received many raves from friends of mine – but then… it just seems like unnecessary competition for the cart.  Sad for them, I hope they do alright… Outside Baoguette is a sign that explains what comprises a banh mi.  I opted for the regular Baoguette.  Please note that at this downtown location, it is $6, not $5 like at many (most? [...]

SF Foodbuzz Food Bloggers Fest – Banh Mi Battle: Lee’s Sandwiches v. Saigon Sandwich (lunch on Sunday)

While it’s true that San Francisco is my favorite domestic city to visit, New York City is still my favorite city in the world.  (Obviously only out of places I’ve been; I can’t say I like it more than places I haven’t actually been to before, duh!)  I detest when people talk shit about my favorite city in the world; it irks me to no end when they say they hate it (well I hate you, how about that?! and just LEAVE, then, ugh), and when people talk about how xx cuisine in NYC isn’t that great… well, I have [...]

Sau Voi Corporation, again

I had the good fortune of “bumping into” Brownie at the Scharffen Berger event I attended; conversation of course centered on food, and at one point, it turned to banh mi.  She mentioned how she was a bit disappointed that I hadn’t liked Sau Voi during my banh mi bender; though she agreed that my sandwiches, judging by my pictures, did look disappointing, Brownie really enjoyed their banh mi sate ga (chicken).  I told her I would definitely go back and try it on her recommendation – especially because it’s so close, and she really liked it, I didn’t see [...]
