Being a frequent patron and supporter of the banh mi cart, I admit I was interested and a bit disturbed by the news of Baoguette opening nearby. Sure it would be great to finally try Baoguette – which has received many raves from friends of mine – but then… it just seems like unnecessary competition for the cart. Sad for them, I hope they do alright…
Outside Baoguette is a sign that explains what comprises a banh mi.
I opted for the regular Baoguette. Please note that at this downtown location, it is $6, not $5 like at many (most? all?) other locations. And yes, I did grab another MASH because I liked it so much and was really happy to see them offered here. Yum for the MASH!
My sandwich?
It was alright. Good. Tasty. But it wasn’t as good as a ‘real’ banh mi. The bread was a little bit lacking, and while the innards were tasty… meh. I’ve had better. For cheaper. And yes, close enough for me to go during my lunch hour.
Yvo says: I understand the draw; it’s banh mi that is pretty good and it’s very close to many downtown offices. But I also understand why I don’t like it as much; it isn’t that close to my office (the cart is closer), the bread isn’t what I like in baguettes, and I’m really in love with Paris banh mi. So, while I can’t say it’s amazing, this place has a purpose and serves it well.
if your office is right there, sure, why not?

you forgot to mention whether this baoguette has as sketchy employees as the baoguette on lex.

I really gotta get down to Paris, and I’m glad you keep reminding me in one form or another 🙂
The biggest reason I’m a Baoguette fan is the bread, so I’m curious as to how boring it was for you. I like that the baguette completely ducks the standard banh mi texture and goes for something much softer, with a crust that’s just crisp enough. Definitely not a “real” banh mi in that sense, though, and I do think $6 is asking a bit too much, even considering the quality of the ingredients.
On another note: Hooray for Mash!
