Delta – First Class

December 5, 2011 by Feisty Foodie 13 Comments

One of my dearest friends – known to y’all on my blog simply as StB – recently got married in Maui, Hawaii. There was no way I was going to miss this for the world, so I took myself on a week long trip… read along as I share everything I ate on this incredible vacation!

A lot of things led to me upgrading to first class for the last leg of my flight to Hawaii – LAX to Maui – you could say the bottom line is that I spoil myself, but that ignores all the other factors like traveling for 14 hours in a day, arriving at my resort past 10pm, and just wanting a little bit of extra comfort.  Why not?

Sadly, this was the non-vegetarian meal choice: grilled chicken, potatoes, marinara (… not really) sauce, salad, and flourless chocolate cake.  I’m guessing on these descriptions because the flight attendant apologetically said “We didn’t get the menus this time so I can’t tell you what it is.”  I wanted to say “What were you doing while the plane was delayed?” – because they held the plane back, but that’s a long story that involves me cursing out LAX repeatedly while trying to make my connection… – so I’ll leave it at this: if I’d known this was what I’d be eating, I’d have sat in coach and ordered from their menu instead.

The chicken was thankfully not overcooked, but it oddly had the skin – along with a lot of fat under the skin – still on it, and was really bland.  Everything else was just OK – if that – and was eaten simply because I didn’t want to starve.

The cake was dense and so fudgy that it made my teeth hurt.  I only ate two bites before I gave up and concentrated on not going into sugar shock.

So… my bottom line?  Upgrading to first class on Delta was totally not worth it.  I didn’t have that much extra space compared to coach – oh no I didn’t! – and the food was awful, so awful I really considered getting a menu from them and buying one of those snack boxes that you can get in coach for like $5.  That’s pretty horrible, and much more reasonably priced than upgrading to first class.  What a waste.

On the bright side, I sat next to a lovely woman who chatted with me for a good hour before she tried to convert me to Mormonism.

I’ll take the bland food over salty food. You can always add salt.

Did you at least drink on the plane to ease your pain?

I was wondering how much better first class would’ve been on a long Delta flight. Do you think the choices would’ve been better if you were going to Asia? Cause they usually have a Chinese meal and a North American meal to choose from – not that the Chinese food I had was any better.

I’m not sure – I’ve mostly enjoyed the food I’ve had on international flights, though I’ve never flown first class internationally. This was actually the first time I’ve ever flown first class, sucks that the food was that terrible!

It was your first time flying first class? Aww, you should’ve saved up to fly with Cathay Pacific or something.. that’s my plan.
