Vegan Divas

August 10, 2011 by Feisty Foodie 7 Comments

I recently had the fab fortune to meet the mastermind behind Vegan Divas, none other than Fernanda Capobianco, a sweet, charming and gorgeous woman, and she was kind enough to share some of her delicious goodies with me.  Talking to her, the passion she has for creating desserts that taste good and are vegan is incredible: it almost made me want to agree that yes, I’ll be vegan too! … if you can promise me all vegan food tastes like this.  Just like non-vegan.  I loved her message that “just because it’s vegan, doesn’t mean it’s good for you, so I wanted to make something that was also good for you, using good ingredients.  A lot of other foods out there are vegan or vegetarian but are just terrible for you, with the amount of other things they put in there.”  (I paraphrased that, but the basic idea is there: eat good food!)

I brought over the stacks of goodies to FeistySis’s to share with the family – this might have been 4th of July – and asking them for their opinions.

Vegan Divas 01

First up was the donut: a huge hit with FeistySis’s mother-in-law, cakey, not too sweet, just right.

The brownie was fudgey, cakey, and tasty.

The carrot cake, however, received high marks from my mother.  FeistyMom is a HUGE carrot cake fan, and her favorite carrot cake comes from Whole Foods.  I mean the woman loves her carrot cake.  I reserved this for her and she pretty much gobbled it down, giving bites to people sparingly just so they could try it, but she really loved the texture.  The cake had a lot of texture going for it, and the frosting wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet.  She even said, “This might be my new favorite carrot cake,” which, if you know my mother, means a lot.  I’m kind of like her in that – I like things, but it takes a lot for me to say something is a favorite.

My brother – like most of my family – is not big on sweets, so he took a lot of prodding before he joined in tasting everything with us.  He finally tried the cheesecake – probably one of the most difficult things to create a vegan version – and though we all agreed the texture isn’t quite like cheesecake, he really enjoyed this.  It wasn’t too sweet, and it was still creamy, very tasty.  He wound up eating a lot more than just one bite 😉

And me?  My personal favorite that I took back from everyone and wouldn’t let them eat anymore?  The chocolate mousse cake.  It was just right – again, a lot of texture to the cake, smooth, chocolatey without being overwhelmingly sweet, and just right.  I really liked this one – a very nice end to a savory meal, definitely.

I really enjoyed the Vegan Divas treats and will be keeping my eye out for these – bring my mom a piece of carrot cake when I need to get on her good side, haha.  I look forward to seeing what other goodies they come up with in the future too.  Whether or not you’re vegan, you definitely deserve to eat treats like this!

Please note that I received these goodies courtesy of Vegan Divas, but I did not receive any monetary compensation for posting this. I was under no obligation to post my opinion, positive or negative; feel free to take from that what you will.

Those vegan desserts actually look good. I hate when food in general looks crappy. It doesn’t make me want to eat it. And I find a lot of crappy looking vegetarian/vegan food. Nice to see something out of the norm.

They definitely tasted good too! And yes, I dislike when food is unattractive- some dishes just will be, nature of the dish, but with cakes and the like, so much potential!

Chocolate mousse cake looks splendid. Wouldn’t let them eat anymore? Man, I would’ve dogged down that entire piece post-haste. 😛

I think you would really like these desserts, TC. Very chocolatey though not overly sweet, which might be to your dislike. Either way, they are very good!
