Double September ML Happy Hour, what does it meannn?
Silly memes aside, Whiskey Rebel was chosen because they’d recently moved their trivia night to Tuesdays, but unfortunately, the week before our happy hour was set, they moved them back to Mondays. Boo… and CT + friends JUST won that week. I am really competitive and wanted to play, but alas, I have class on Mondays until 9pm… boooooo. But Whiskey Rebel’s appeal also lay in its bring-your-own-food policy (much like Snafu, home to two previous happy hours, and owned by the same people), and its cheap drink specials.
So we each brought stuff to share, or not – BeerBoor brought a coupla cheesesteaks from Carl’s, and I ate half – Cheez Whiz wit onions and ‘shrooms, yum. You can sorta see what TT brought – snacks from H-Mart, near his office. Korean “bugles” (corn snacks in the shape of bugles), seaweed-wrapped tube crackers, and these miniature crab-snacks that we all tried and agreed are vile. I’m sorry. I tried it and I couldn’t get past its taste.
Goats and Abby brought sandwiches they’d assembled with meats and cheeses from, I believe, Eataly. Awesome nomminess!
Uh, so, I got really drunk accidentally – I was first to arrive and ordered a drink, then kept getting handed more, and it just got really ugly, really fast, thus the super blurry photos. But here’s a samosa, one of many that CheeeeEEEEse bought from across the street.
…and the (blurry, dark) inside shot, which was slightly spicy.
Yay! New people! Niu Yorker brought an assortment of mini-cannolis, which were lovely and yummy. I forget where he said they were from, so maybe someone will pipe up with that info…
and our other new victim, I mean, attendee, MadJac, brought “ghetto” fried rice with curry. (She said it was ghetto; I said it was gooooood!) Thanks MadJac – I need this recipe now…
Uh, TC, who seems to bring chicken to these things more often than not 😉 brought a bunch of Popeye’s chicken – yummmmm! He told me about this awesome deal going on that’s like $11 for 11 pieces? that’s crazytalk! And also was super kind to make sure I got a piece of NOT SPICY (since I complained a few times about going to BonChon and being accidentally hit with spicy pieces, boo). (And also supplied me with pudding for the rest of the week… mmmmm, pudding)
A shot of everyone looking at something… the game, in all likelihood, though the TV on the left was showing the pathetic Mets game /grumble
Hungry brought banh mi from… unfortunately, by this time, I was so blurry that I couldn’t eat one, as good as it smelled. Mmmmmmmm. (I’m an idiot.)
M brought us homemade beer bread with beer & cheese dip, and omfg, I need to get her recipe. Not for the bread cuz I can’t bake – even though she said it was easy to make (without a machine, people; this woman is god, S-E-a-L, you need to marry her – then invite me over for football season, just so I can eat your game day eats… and pretend I care about football. 🙂
Last but not least, CT brought kati rolls from Roomali nearby.
I tried one of these much later and can see why they appeal, though the one I had was pretty spicy and would definitely be better hot.
One last picture of the crowd – definitely a cool place to chill, with a good vibe and pretty empty on a Tuesday – which is good when you’ve got a crowd the size we had, we basically took over the back. Obviously with a smaller turn out, I’d want more strangers… (more eye candy!) but this was perfect for what we had.
I definitely recommend Whiskey Rebel – the drink specials were cheap, the vibe was cool, and management didn’t give us an issue at all about anything, cleared our (empty) drinks regularly and didn’t bat an eye at all the food we brought (and we mostly cleaned up after ourselves). Even when a glass was dropped and broken, we weren’t treated like small children – perfect place to hang out. Thumbs up!
(Although BeerBoor will tell you the beer selection was not quite up to his snuff, I’m sure it was passable as he was drinking something, so at least one beer is up to his standards. Ha!)

Me enjoyed the banh mi, kati rolls, cannolis, beer bread&dip, and Goat’s italian hero among the goodies. Thanks ladies and gents for the contribs. The ghetto curry fried rice was interesting. WIsh it was warmer but still flavorful. *shake it into my mouth with the styrofoam cup* Samosas were a tasty treat too. Mmm spicy!!
“I feel like chicken tonight, like chicken tonight!”
I also brought a large order of cajun fries from Popeye’s that peeps nooshed on. 😛
Very nice happy hour!

The banh mi was from Baoguette.

You are correct. I don’t expect every place to have the HH beer list of a Stag’s Head or Rattle N Hum, but honestly, if a person goes to a meetup strictly for the beer, he’s doing it wrong. I’d rather we have more HHs like this one. Maybe with more trivia.
