A couple weeks back, CT & I decided to meet up with our friend TX for a low-key bite at a local restaurant, Bar Breton. It has been open for a while, but we never have gotten the chance to go. The restaurant was also participating in Blackboard Eats, even though it was only 25% off instead of the traditional 30%, a discount is a discount. The restaurant focuses on food from Brittany, France especially galettes, which are savory buckwheat crepes.
(apologies for the pictures, they are from my camera phone.)
We started with two appetizers to share among the three of us.
Grilled Calamari with Tomatoes and Watermelon. These were quite interesting. With the “lollipop” presentation, I went all in and put the whole thing in my mouth. Unfortunately, it was pretty big in my mouth (TWSS). A very fresh bite, but the calamari was underseasoned.
CT says: I wish I got a picture of TT eating it! I took mine off the toothpick after that and the flavors were good, but nothing spectacular. When eating all the components together, I mostly just tasted the watermelon. Individually, each part was nice, but just nice.
Chicken & Bacon Croquettes with Paprika Sauce. These were tasty, but nothing special. The paprika sauce was pretty.
CT says: Fried yumminess with bacon? Yes please! Even though the flavors weren’t that special, I could eat a whole plateful of them.
Still, the apps were quite filling as I don’t think any of us finished our entrees.
TX got the Caprese galette. It is kind of hard see under those greens, but there is mozzarella and tomato sauce there.
CT got the BB Burger. It is house-ground brisket and short rib. I had some fries, they were yummy.
CT says: I was really craving a burger so decided to try this one out. It was pretty delicious and juicy! Best burger ever? No. But if you’re there and craving a burger or something meatier than their galettes, it definitely satisfies. And the fries were really good too, with a nice crunch!
Since we had the discount and everything, I went all out and got the Lobster Carbonara galette. It had bacon, peas, and a lobster foam. This was a savory bomb! It was super tasty, but also very rich. It had some nice lobster chunks in it. The galette reminded me of a blue corn tortilla.
Since it took a little while to get our mains, we were given two complementary desserts. It was very nice of the waitress to do this especially since we had never complained about the wait.
Blueberry Bread Pudding. I was way too full to try this.
CT says: I don’t consider myself a bread pudding fan, but this was yum! I, too, was super full, but I couldn’t stop myself from indulging either… although a dessert galette with Nutella wouldn’t have been rejected! Still, I would order this dessert next time.
Sorbet, I believe it was grapefruit. I had a little as a palette cleanser. Quite refreshing!
All in all, it was a good choice for a casual bite. The menu is an interesting especially the galettes, since most people have never heard of them before, myself included. A welcome addition to the neighborhood. Just be ware of the drinks as they were pricier than expected.

This all looks good! I used to work in that neighborhood, but it wasn’t open in time for me to try. I might just have to make a trip up there.

Haha, just because you’ve never heard of them doesn’t mean the rest of us haven’t ;P
I really like that picture of the blueberry dessert, I don’t know why.
Since I don’t like galettes that much, I’ll pass… but it does sound interesting and those bacon croquettes? You know I want one 🙂
