Eddie’s Sweet Shop

Another romp around Forest Hills – post-movie date, BF and I headed to Eddie’s Sweet Shop, apparently a Forest Hills institution where everything is made in-house.  Pretty amazing; they’ve been around since 1909.

“Funny” enough, I actually found Eddie’s a while back when I first moved (back) to Forest Hills, Googling for places to eat, and read a few random posts about this great ice cream shop.  Unfortunately, since it’s not quite close to the train station – you can walk about 15 minutes, or you can drive – I never had an opportunity to go.  When I finally decided it was time to go (in February, because I’m a genius), it snowed like mad and Eddie’s was, once again, put on the back burner.

Opportunity knocked when the BF and I had a movie date and wanted a quick bite afterwards, so I suggested we drive over to Eddie’s to check it out.

The menu is simple and straightforward, and incredibly inexpensive.  When was the last time you saw a hot fudge sundae for $5.50?  EVERY INGREDIENT MADE IN-HOUSE???

BF went for his standard coffee ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.  I wanted to split one but he said “No I want my own, just get one for yourself, I don’t mind” when I said I couldn’t eat too much.

Normally, I can’t think of any ice cream I like topped with something better than vanilla, fearing any topping to mess with the flavor of the ice cream (I’m not very imaginative).  But this time, I decided that mint chocolate chip HAS chocolate in it, so how could hot fudge be BAD with it?  Right?

RIGHT!  The thick fudge was awesome with the delicious ice cream, which boasted a really good – but not strong – mint flavor.  Thick whipped cream, a yummy cherry, we were both scraping the bottom of our bowls soon after we received our desserts.  SO good.  And now that summer is in full swing (boy, IS IT!), it’s perfect that I “discovered” this place – definitely adding it to our rotation of places to eat dessert… mmm, sooo good!!!  I want another sundae just writing this!

Yvo says: This shop is adorable – there’s also a ‘penny candy’ counter across from the ice cream counter, where BF and I amused ourselves by picking out items we recalled eating as children and sharing them with each other.  The candy was reasonably priced (though not a penny, also not marked up a billion percent, either!), and we left Eddie’s extremely sated and contented with our choice.  NOM.  There are tables in the back but why would you sit back there when you can sit at the awesome counter with the stools?

Oooh, I’ve always wanted to try that place! But I’ve only been in that area after stuffing my face at Dee’s down the street. Next time I’ll make room. There’s a similar old school ice cream parlor near me in Jackson Heights called Jahn’s, but I don’t think they make their own stuff.
