After a bit of drinking (okay, a lot), HB, AB and I wandered around in the frigid cold looking for something to eat. After a Knife + Fork FAIL, we stumbled into Mermaid Inn which happily accomodated us best they could – we were seated within 5 minutes. The hostess, whoever she is (didn’t catch her name) was actually SUPER nice and “Oh I totally want to see you eat here!” and really did try to get things settled quickly as possible. Very sweet.
I thought this was a cool paper-butter-lid. (I was also toasted.)
My drink. I forget what it was, but it was only alright. In case you can’t tell, I really like fizzy (alcoholic) drinks.
AB ordered crabcake to start. I know she liked the chips, but the crabcake was only alright. I think she wanted more lump crabmeat and less bread crumb filler. I didn’t try it.
She also ordered the bisque, which she said was really good. I again didn’t try it.
HB, who had eaten there before, said she’d enjoyed the lobster roll, so we both ordered that. The fries were dusted a little too liberally in Old Bay, and the brioche bun meant I couldn’t consider this a real lobster roll, but overall, it was fine. Passing. Acceptable. Nothing to write home about or go out of your way to consume. In other words: a big pile of MEH. Unmemorable. The lobster salad was a little too wet, but boasted a fair amount of lobster meat.
When we asked to see the dessert menu, the waitress said “Alright” and disappeared briefly, returning with three pots de creme. “We don’t have a dessert menu, actually… but we have these! On the house!” and distributed them, along with those paper fortune tellers (that you hold in the palm of your hand). That was cute. The pot de creme were alright, a little stiff, but not overpoweringly sweet, which was nice.
Yvo says: Honestly, with such an effusively nice hostess, I really want to like The Mermaid Inn. But the food was all pretty mediocre, and the prices weren’t inexpensive enough that I would go back just for good service couple with mediocre food. I’d have to say pass on this one for what I got – maybe there are other dishes there that are amazing and totally worth eating there. I don’t know.
not really sure… need to try more dishes to really determine

SURPRISED YOU WERE ABLE TO TAKE GOOD PICS SINCE YOU WERE TOASTED. HOPE YOU WERE ABLE TO THANK THE HOSTESS WHOSE NAME YOU DIDN’T GET FOR HER EXCELLENT SERVICE CAUSE THAT COUNTS SO MUCH ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DIDN’T CARE FOR THE FOOD.

Hope that hostess was me! If not, I’m glad one of us left a good impression with you. Hope to see you soon.
