Utopia Restaurant

July 9, 2009 by Feisty Foodie 3 Comments

BB and I recently went to a screening of The Proposal, and afterwards, wandered around looking for food.  We’d originally planned on going to Salumeria Rosi, since I’ve read so much about it since it first opened a few months ago, but when we got there close to 9:30, the place looked packed and was way darker (read: more romantic) than either of us had thought it might be, so we turned around and began walking away, back towards the train station.

As we walked, however, we passed by Utopia Restaurant, a brightly lit, mostly empty restaurant that, with its booths and countertop dining, screamed friendly diner.  And you know, I do love a good diner…  So we went in and ordered.

BB ordered a waffle and Canadian bacon (don’t start with me – I already mocked her for the whole “that ain’t bacon” thing, k?).  After we’d ordered, we could both smell it being cooked on the waffle iron, always a good sign when it’s fresh like that.  I know for sure she liked her waffle.  No comment on the ‘bacon’ though 😉

As for myself, I’ve been having a real hankerin’ for a good Greek salad lately.  I really like the Greek salad at Tower Diner near where I live, but I don’t see the harm in trying other places too!  While this place was good, there was a little too much cheese blobbed on, and the dressing was simply oil & vinegar – Tower Diner’s is exceptional because they provide you with a cup of vinaigrette, I can’t say for sure what’s in it, but it’s really good and mixes surprisingly well with all of the ingredients (minus anchovies because I have eaten their anchovies, which are way too fishy for my tastes and contain large bones… I will pass on that!).

Yvo says: Solid diner fare – we saw a lot of people around us drift in and out who appeared to be regulars/locals.  I would say it’s good, just not destination dining.  However, with the Lincoln Square movie theater nearby (where a lot of pre-screenings/premieres/showings take place), it will easily be a suggestion next time I’m in the area.

Can I second the 'Big Nick's' suggestion? Really friendly waitstaff (borderline overly attentive), but the sumo burger w/fries is a good deal. I think most people can probably split it for 2 meals at <$15.

Hmmm… the cheese looks like several piles of chalk waiting to be crushed up and used in a classroom. Thanks for the warning.
