Veronica’s Kitchen

After reading about this place on Downtown Lunch, I decided to check out Veronica’s Kitchen myself.  I walk by all the time but never noticed it before… I must be oblivious.

As I was perusing the menu, I realized I’d never had Jamaican or Caribbean food before, and have no point of comparison.  Well, if it tastes good, it tastes good, in my mind anyway.  I quickly decided on the bbq beef ribs, but when it got to my turn, I was informed that it wasn’t Friday, so I couldn’t have them.  Oops.

Remembering a long ago time when I realized I’d never had oxtail (in any form, any cuisine), I decided this would be a good time to try it.  So I ordered that, over rice (because it seemed saucy and like it’d be delicious with rice) and cabbage because I like vegetables.

Then I went beyond just visiting the places Daniel visits after the fact, and tried to take a picture similar to his.  It’s a FAIL but I like the pic.  Anyway, the oxtail was super soft and tender, flavorful, and it made me think “Why haven’t I been eating oxtail all my life?  Why have my parents been hiding this delicious meat from me?  Is it time for me to learn how to cook this?  No, this is seriously yummy… I think I shall just let Ms. Veronica always cook it for me.”  The rice played nicely against the meat, since it was a lil salty, and the cabbage made me feel better about eating such fatty meat for lunch.

Yvo says: I will definitely be back sooner than later to try more of this wonderfully flavored food.  $6 and that box was packed to the brim; the clearly family-run cart super friendly and yummy why are you still reading this?  Go and get some!!!  Right now!!!

I read your food blog all the time and have even tried a few places you’ve liked.
I’m stunned that you have NEVER had carribean food. You have NO idea what you’re missing. You really need to go to Brooklyn to some carryouts to try great West Indian food!
One restaurant which is over priced but very good is SugarCane on Flatbush and St. Marks in BK! Get the OXTAILS AND SHRIMP ROTI! Excellent! Plus you always want to eat Roti from Trini’s!

Caribbean food is sooo good, especially Jamaican. I am a Barbadian, but I love Jamaican food. Have you ever had jerk chicken or Trini rotis? To die for (depending on the restaurant of course)…
