StB and I recently took an excursion to Brooklyn – to Williamsburg, more specifically – to check out what the big foodie fuss about the area is. One of the places that repeatedly crossed both our respective radars – and surprisingly, we have very few subscriptions that are the same (I subscribe to way more cooking blogs than she does) – was egg, for its delicious brunch offerings. So off we went.
The menu… click to enlarge. She opted for Eggs Rothko and I the Chorizo & Eggs because homemade chorizo, sign me up!
I know she liked her dish a lot but I’m sure her opinion will be up on her blog shortly.
When my plate arrived, I think I recoiled in horror. I was freshly off the Meat Hiatus, true, but I didn’t expect – nor want! – such a big blob of meat plopped on my plate, with the eggs off to the side and a few slices of whole grain toast. Yeeks. I mean, it was tasty – albeit a touch oily – and to be honest, quite yummy, but with the eggs somewhat overpoached (no super runny yolk to be found here, sadface) and the yolk not runny enough to mix and offset the salty meat, I was really having trouble eating the meat. I put some on the bread and ate it that way; I ate a bit with the egg whites; I ate a little bit plain, but in the end, I gave up and didn’t clean my plate, which is extremely unusual for me (I was brought up to always finish your plate!).
Overall, brunch was tasty and really cheap – though when I commented on such, StB reminded me that “We’re not in Manhattan; rent prices are lower and the price reflects that,” – I think our total bill came out to $25 or so, including tip.
Yvo says: A nice neighborhood place; destination dining, this is not (so to everyone who said it was, you’re wrong! – but I’m not mad). I wouldn’t mind having a similar place (with similar prices!) in my neighborhood. Yummy, affordable, with a mild wait, cute/sparse decor… and near to some good food shopping. It’s good. But I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.
middle of the road good

We have a chain of something similar here…all eggs/all the time. I don’t like eggs so I have only been once, but if would be nice if you had one close to you.
How far is Williamsburg from you?

SEems like most dishes are quite heavy and not vegetarian friendly. Doubt I’d travel to Brooklyn for it though. If I were to travel to Brooklyn for one cuisine, that would be Middle Eastern on Atlantic Ave. Love Sahadi. 🙂

that place gets packed sometimes… the prices there look really good but eek, crowds!

A place with a name like Egg really makes my mouth water. I wish there was something like that in the hood as well.

I had the chorizo and egg sandwich with the salsa verde which was awesome. The sandwich bread was a very soft hamburger roll. Mine didn’t come all deconstructed like yours. I think in mine, everything was more proportioned 🙂 I agree that the chorizo was too salty though!

Yum yum yum… I love Egg! If only the wait wasn't so long on weekends, I would probably have eaten here many more times. I'd say I've had a meal here maybe 5 times now, and have always left stuffed and satisfied.
I have no complaints about the service (kind of rare for me, I will admit). The food is delicious and hearty and buttery and…. did I say delicious already? I love the egg and chorizo sandwich. thank you for sharing your post.
