Christmas Morning Breakfast

January 13, 2009 by Feisty Foodie 5 Comments

Normally, Christmas Morning Breakfast is kind of a thing with me.  In case you couldn’t tell, however, I was feeling pretty depressed, so I offered to my family that I would just pick up my presents on Christmas Eve and go home to wallow in my own filth.  However, my family can be pretty insistent (I stress that in this case, it wasn’t the annoying kind of insistent, it was more, “Are you sure everything’s ok?  Wouldn’t you rather be with family instead of alone?” and the caring kind of insistent), my brother-in-law tried valiantly to make things easier for me (and even told me the entire menu for Christmas Eve dinner ahead of time, which he’s never done before), and I wound up cheering up a little bit before the big day anyway.

So while I didn’t make homemade sausage patties this year, or a frittatta, we still ate very well.  Of course I made bacon; I picked up fresh bagels from the store at the end of my block; there was lox, cream cheese, thinly sliced onions…

Mmm, my luscious sesame bagel with cream cheese, lox and onions.  I don’t know why, but I never eat bagels as a “sandwich” or not a closed one, anyway – I eat each half individually.  Maybe it’s because you get more cream cheese that way – I’m not really sure.  Watching my brother eat a bagel, it clearly can’t be from my mother making them for me that way?  (In fact, I know she didn’t, because I’d open them, and be horrified to discover that she’d spread the thinnest layer ever possible of cream cheese on only one side.  It used to infuriate little-me.)

My brother’s everything bagel with cream cheese, lox, onions, and … bacon.  Yes.  Bacon.

My “healthy” addition: fresh blackberries and blueberries topped with homemade whipped cream (a dash of sugar, a splash of vanilla, heavy cream, then beaten until it gives up *wink).  Yes, I made the whipped cream, so it wasn’t like I just stood there making bacon.  Oh, I also made eggs to order, whoever wanted, but I didn’t want, nor did my brother, so I didn’t manage a picture of my sister’s eggs scrambled with asparagus, mushrooms, onions and cheese, or my mother and brother-in-law’s respective sunny-side-ups.

And later, while watching a movie, a bowlful of whipped cream over more fresh berries.  Delicious and refreshing.

BTW — I don’t know why everyone lauded my brother’s lox sandwich + bacon, but when I had extra whipped cream on my plate leftover and scooped it up with a piece of bacon, I was called “gross”!!!  It’s salty then slightly sweet – and it was AWESOME!!!  Hello?  Can I get a “amen” from someone please?

The present opening after breakfast was awesome per usual — more on the fun kitchen gadgets in another post… 😉

Happy eating, always!!!

I’m the same way with bagels! I think it’s because I don’t eat them too often and it makes the experience last longer when you don’t eat is as a sandwich. I like to savor it 🙂

If it is any consolation I made your "smushed latkes" or whatever you call them from last Christmas.

Can you say Skippy's new addicition?

And I would love to give you an amen on that bacon/blueberry bite, but …. uh …. you will eat bacon on anything…giggle…and I like the lox/bacon/onion better ;D

Amen!! Bacon makes everything awesome! I’m the same with you with my bagels. I need them to be LOADED with cream cheese so each half (or quarter depending who cuts it) has ample creamy goodness for my mouth!
