Product Review: Cream Puffs!

January 29, 2008 by Feisty Foodie 1 Comment

The background:

A little over a week ago, or rather, Sunday, January 20th, to be exact, I was over at my friends’ house in PA to watch the NY Giants (GO BIG BLUE!!!) surge to victory over the Green Bay Packers.  As we all got geared up- the hostess and her son are HUGE Cowboy fans, so they were pretty much up in arms over the whole game- she offered us a drink, and we wound up drinking Bailey’s Irish Cream over ice.  And wow, chilled over ice, this is some good stuff.  (I can’t wait, however, to try Coole Swan, whose press release promises to be a more sophisticated, smoother, better version of Bailey’s Irish Cream which is “for kids” apparently… haha)  And who can’t appreciate a good buzz going from drinking something that is almost like a tall cold glass of milk … but better!!!

And, well, I stress eat.  I especially stress eat sweet things, for which I normally have little to no cravings, and salty things, which I’m always able to eat.  When I’m really stressed, I like to eat something salty and something sweet at the same time, alternating bites to counter the saltiness or the sweetness.  Yeah.  I do that.  Yes, I have a weight problem and an eating disorder (over and compulsive eating, that is).  I’m really stressed lately… so…

The drink itself is almost the perfect combination right there (along with some potato chips!), since it satisfies the sweet tooth and simultaneously gives me a buzz, but imagine my delight when the other day at the grocery store, I was um, browsing the ice cream section and stumbled across Bailey’s Irish Cream Cream Puffs!

The box of 28 cream puffs was on sale for $4.99, normally goes for $5.99.  The “directions” tell you to let defrost naturally at room temperature for about 30 minutes, warning you not to defrost in the microwave.  I want to know who the genius is that tried to defrost them in the microwave, because as impatient as I am, I popped one in my mouth as soon as I got home, but thought it tasted good enough to eat like that without needing a spin in the microwave, haha.  After the requisite 30 minutes, however, the insides had softened up considerably and turned into creamy goodness.

waiting for the puffs to defrost…

I was actually really pleased as the taste takes everything good about Bailey’s Irish Cream and makes it yummier- it removes the pungent alcohol kick all but completely, and adds the pastry puff around it to make it a good snack.  35 calories per puff, which means you can have 3-6 without feeling too bad about your little snack.

I would definitely get these again, and if you’re a fan of frozen cream puffs, these are right up your alley.  Bonbons and cream puffs make the perfect accompaniment to a chick flick and some wine.  Or a glass of Bailey’s Irish Cream… yum!

Yvo says: No, it’s not gourmet, but they also don’t claim to be or try to be anything but what they are: something naughty to eat while you stuff your face, sobbing over your latest relationship problem or just entertaining some friends for a casual get together.  And why not?  Some of us don’t bake or deserve a break from all the from-scratch-food-making we do.  Go and enjoy!
