Otafuku

December 31, 2007 by Feisty Foodie 1 Comment

We started off our super-cultural day early yesterday by going to the Guggenheim and getting in a good hour or so of walking around and looking at … well, in my opinion, really poorly labeled art. I won’t get into what sucked and what didn’t, but you can look up what was on display if you like…

In any case, after we were done at the museum, we headed down to the East Village and stopped by Otafuku for a snack to tide us over till dinner. StB had generously provided us with ginormous cookies from Levain Bakery, so we didn’t need a full meal to keep us going.

I first heard of Otafuku eons ago on A Year in Food (unfortunately the poster of that blog has long since gone onto other projects and no longer posts). Though it’s right in the same area as my normal stomping grounds, I never think to go there since I’m usually too hungry to eat just 6 takoyaki. Well, today we just wanted a snack, and so I split an order of octopus takoyaki with HB.

The takoyaki were still piping hot and totally delicious, generously filled with octopus, which is delightfully chewy, while the creamy pancake (?) batter was lightly sweet and just overall yummy.

BB wanted to get okonomiyaki as well, but I thought it would be too much so I declined, and unfortunately, StB and HB both decided against it as well. (See next post!)

Yvo says: For $5/6 takoyaki, not a bad snack at all. The guys were really nice and didn’t yell at us for standing in the tiny storefront to eat our fare (there were people sitting on the bench outside, and it was kind of cold, but there was no line, no other patrons at the moment so we weren’t really in the way). I would definitely go back, and definitely will be going back now when I’m super hungry and there’s a line at Sobaya across the street or when I’m just shopping in the area and want to revitalize without sitting down for a real meal. In fact, I’m positive I’ll find myself here on Friday.
recommended for a snack

I love Levain’s cookies, though I’m surprised you had any room left in your belly after eating one of those monsters. Happy new year, Yvo!
