Best Burgers Ever

April 13, 2007 by Feisty Foodie 4 Comments

Have you ever just gotten a really bad craving for something?

To make matters worse, when you go and try to fill that craving, something gets in the way.  Or it’s just not quite what you were looking for, when you go to a place you’ve never been, or your usual place just was off that day…

I’d been craving a good, juicy burger for a few weeks.  I managed to get one from the deli near my apartment, but it didn’t quite hold up to standards and I was very disappointed.  Finally, I decided to take matters into my own hands.  Though it’s been years since I’ve made a burger, I figured what could be so hard?

Ground beef from my freezer (I couldn’t tell you if it’s ground chuck, sirloin, or neither, quite honestly)
Worcestershire sauce
Minced onion (I had literally just run out of yellow onions, so I used red)

Mix it all up.  Form patties with your hands.  I used a LOT of Worcestershire sauce because I’ve been really liking the tanginess lately, but that’s all optional and up to you.  I’ve heard of people mixing ground meat with a packet of Lipton’s onion soup mix, and enjoying it that way.  Everyone has their own recipe!  Share yours, if you like!  Once the patties are formed, throw them on your grill, George Foreman, outdoor, whatever you have.  I used my cast iron skillet because I didn’t feel like lugging out the Foreman.

As for toppings, go nuts.  I like tomato, bacon, and a little pepper jack cheese.  BF only wanted bacon.  I also slipped a little mayo on top to glue the tomatoes down, and so the juices wouldn’t just sog up my whole bun (a trick I learned from Alton Brown- plus I just really like mayo, yes, I do).

For the bun, I’d ordered some brioche hamburger buns from (of course) FreshDirect.  Just thaw and serve, so I toasted these a bit after I split them.  The buttery softness of the brioche went excellently with the juicy burger.  Yummmmmm.

Last but not least- sides.  We were actually completely happy with our choices and did not need any sides.  We were stuffed after the burger.

HAPPY EATING!!!

I dont eat meat anymore, but more for ethical reasons. I mean theres nothing like a great piece of meat! But lets face it there are some really cruel practices that go on in this world that make for less healthy fare for us to choose from….but i digress….When I did eat meat, a burger recipe that I loved was to mix in minced garlic, along with minced onion or shallot, a little worchestershire sauce, not too much so it wouldnt get too mushy, a raw egg, and I would form the patty around a few small cubes of cheese, whether it was blue cheese, smoked mozerella, brie, etc you get the point, whatever you’d like. Then I would top it with a garlic aoli (easy recipe of mayo, minced garlic, lemon and salt to taste). 🙂

My friends totally love forming patties around the cheese so when you grill the patties, the cheese melts on the inside and when you bite into it, you get to ooey gooey cheesy goodness.

hi! New to your site, found it by accident 🙂 But I make burgers all the time and change them up everytime. ALL of these are mixed together before throwing them on the BBQ. Here are a few options:

    1) Hamburger, chopped garlic, green onions, one egg, crackers, a whack of oregano, basil and fresh pepper. My FAVOURITE way to top is with Ceaser dressing and some red onions, but they’re good with anything.

    2) Hamburger, an egg, some crackers, and a dollop of pesto – mix it all together before BBQ’ing. mmmmmmmm so good…

    3) Hamburger, an egg, crackers, cubed feta, greek seasoning and some teeny chopped up peppers – top with homous and tzatziki, some red onions and tomoatoes and even some cucumber slices.

    3) Hamburger, egg, crackers (staples burger items I suppose), shredded monterey Jack cheese and a dollop of Salsa – top with cheese and salsa. mmmm again, so good.

    Have fun!

Growing up we called these sizzle burgers…we put the onion in, but we melted butter in the skillet, plopped the burgers in and shook the Worshtershire [sp] on them as they cooked…neccessary that they sizzle all the while they cook….

My kids adore them…they are so yummy….

I also had a neighbor that made hamburgers that were SO GOOD, but she wouldn’t share her recipe [due to the fact it was the ONLY thing she cooked and she was very protective of what she considered HER recipe] but her son ratted her out, b/c he was cool and liked us…turns out she mixed equal parts hamburger and ground mild sausage to make the patties and grilled them….

not healthly at all…but so great for a backyard grill out…..mmmmm

I have to say tho’ [no disrespect intended] to teriteriboberi…isn’t egg and cracker mixed with hamburger a meatloaf burger? I am sure it is extremely yummy – but isn’t it heavier too? Just wondering….
