FreshDirect: Lemon Dill Salmon Promo

November 2, 2006 by Feisty Foodie 3 Comments

Deviating from my normal reviews… I’ve been the recipient of a few FreshDirect promos lately for their heat&eat line of food.  I documented it- so far, they’ve both been salmon.

The first one, an individual, supposedly under 500 calories meal for one person (for my non-New York readers, if you want to see their description, you need to enter a NYC zip code- try 10017), was a lemon dill salmon with asparagus and fingerling potatoes.  The instructions tell me to just remove the cardboard packaging, pop it in the microwave for xx seconds, let it sit for a few minutes then peel the plastic back and enjoy.  Sure.

As you can see, the overall effect came out to be a little… well, blah.  There’s one tiny sliver of a lemon included, but it pretty much dried up; the asparagus and potatoes helped keep the salmon off the bottom of the container, and I think, helped “steam” the fish, which gave it a sort of moist but bland flavor.  It could have done with salt, which I understand is a hard seasoning to add since that draws out moisture, but even the dill was lackluster and just… boring.  The salmon was cooked to an alright done-ness, but still.  Just eh.  The asparagus was overcooked on some edges, the potatoes dreadfully tasteless.  I ate it dutifully but desperately wished that it tasted better.  I was glad I hadn’t paid the $10.99 they ask for this item; it was way boring and if I were on a diet, this would just make me further hate being on a diet.

Yvo says:  Pass on this one.

i’ve never been a fan of “heat and eat” meals from anyplace. this is the type of food you can make in batches and heat yourself. it’s a lot tastier.

10017! That’s my zipcode (or rather, the zipcode to my firm). I, too have never been a big fan of the “heat and eat” stuff either, but Whole Foods has some really good looking dishes these days.
