Sugar Sweet Sunshine

This review is slightly different from others because I didn’t go here.  I’m not a cupcake fanatic, and I’m not a big fan of baked goods or sweets in general.  But I’ve heard from her about her cupcake quest last year- cupcakes were the “it” food item, with Magnolia Bakery giving birth to many spin offs- and when she declared that Sugar Sweet Sunshine was the best of them all, after trying them all, I was curious… but not curious enough to go over there and try. 

So yesterday, when my coworker emailed me the 411 that it was a partner’s birthday in her area and there were cupcakes from this very bakery lingering, to come on by if I wanted one, I hustled my butt over there and picked up the last vanilla-cake-with-chocolate-frosting cupcake (there were a few lemon and a few chocolate with chocolate or chocolate with vanilla cakes left, but no red velvet cupcakes (which is apparently what they’re famous for). 

I was surprised but pleased that these were noticeably smaller than the Magnolia ones, because the Magnolia ones were huge and just too big to eat comfortably.  The cake itself was moist and very yummy, gently flavored while the chocolate frosting was not overwhelmingly thick as at Burgers & Cupcakes.  Overall, I really enjoyed this cupcake (again, despite not being a big cupcake person to begin with) and would definitely order a bunch for my next party. 

Yvo says: I’m not sure what the wait is like, but these are yummy cupcakes!  I’m not even sure how much they are… but I really enjoyed the cupcake.  Bear in mind, I’ve only been to Magnolia once, and if you count them in the cupcake race, burgers&cupcakes also once, so I can’t really compare all of them, but these were definitely worth a repeat visit.  Yummy!
