We happened to be in the area so my snuggly and I dropped in to Five Points for brunch yesterday. I was disappointed when the hostess told us it’d be at least a 30 minute wait, but pleased that she asked for our cell phone number so when our table was ready, they could call us. We wandered off to shop a little at Crate & Barrel a few blocks away, but as soon as we got into the shopping, they called and our table was ready.
French toast // eggs rancheros // side of bacon with sour cherries
I tried a bite of the French toast and it was really yummy. Normally I’d be displeased with them doing my syrup for me, but it was more than enough for all of the toast- I’m not a big morning-pastry person, either, but this was satisfying. Snuggly liked it very much as well; he loves French toast.
My eggs rancheros were a little disappointing. The salsa verde was slopped all over the entire dish- baked underneath some of the eggs- which I found icky because I wasn’t sure if the egg was slimy from the salsa or from being undercooked. The egg yolks themselves were hard almost all the way through, which was another point to note, since I prefer soft yolks. A bright spot in the dish was the crispy tortilla strips on top- those were quite yummy! and I liked the pico de gallo that was hiding underneath those. A bite of the tortille strips, egg white, salsa verde and pico de gallo almost was excellent, but I couldn’t get over the slight sliminess of the salsa and the slight overdone-ness of the egg white.
Our waiter did tell me later that they were having a bad kitchen day with drama galore (we tipped him kindly accordingly), so perhaps that added to my eggs being only so-so. There are still dishes I would go back to try, and the place is not expensive for food at all… so I will probably go back another time.
The bacon was good as well, crispy and chewy at the same time. The sour cherries, which I’d never eaten before, were a bit surprising in my mouth, but an interesting experience nonetheless.
Overall… I’d still go back. Our bill came to $70 with a generous tip… I had a mimosa, he had two strawberry bellinis, they were tasty!
Yvo says: Despite not being able to get reservations this time, our table came up pretty quickly and I appreciated that they called our cell phones to tell us they were ready. The atmosphere is pleasant, conducive to a relaxing Sunday brunch (although this Asian bitch at the table next to us kept listening to our conversation and looking at me), and the waitstaff is very friendly and helpful. I am definitely going back to try more stuff… if I’m in the area. Enjoy!
