Cuisine: American fast food, not a chain– perhaps NYC’s own version of In-n-Out?
Price: Expensive for what it is, but oh so worth it (around $20 for 2 people)
Craig and I are frequent visitors to the Sheepshead Bay original, so last night, on our way home from Penn Station, when we saw this one, which we’d been meaning to try since its opening about a year ago, we went for it.
The first surprise was when I ordered my standard roast beef sandwich (made on the premises fresh daily, this roast beef is out of this world!), the guy taking my order asked me how I’d like my roast beef. Not that I’d never heard a question like that, but “the one in Sheepshead Bay” never asks me that, it’s always cooked just right to medium rare. So I told him rare, with cheeze (“You can have Cheez on anything you Please”). Craig ordered his medium, with no cheeze, just gravy. I have to say, I should have asked for medium as well, because they know how to do medium perfectly, with a splash of pink in the center.
Their roast beef is so tender, I can’t even describe the taste. With the cheeze, it is just right for me. We also both ordered fresh squeezed lemonades, and one order of fries with a side of cheeze for the fries. The fries, sized and shaped like chips, were the perfect complement.
I definitely recommend stopping by, though if you can, go to the one in Sheepshead Bay, nothing ever beats the original. Their Manhattan location does a good job of coming close, but, nothing can beat the original.
Yvo says: Definitely go here, especially if you like roast beef, and/or if you like cheeze. They have a much bigger menu than what I mention here, and everything I’ve tried (chicken fingers; corn fritters; mashed potatoes) and watched others eat (salads; sweet potatoes; hamburgers) is delicious/looks delicious. Yummy!!!
