Veniero’s

IMG_4431.JPG

When last I posted about Veniero’s, I mentioned how disappointed I was that they got rid of the tiramisu cup.  After Congee Village, we all wanted dessert, so we took the short drive up to Veniero’s, and I was eager to see if, in the months since I’d last been, they’d returned it to the menu.  Unfortunately, this was not the case, but I gamely decided to try something else – the menu looked different again, in any case.

BF and JP both ordered the molten lava cake; unfortunately, JP’s was cooked all the way through, so he sent it back.  BF’s was also overcooked, but he opted to keep it.

Not that much melting…

Where’s the oozy chocolate center?  BF ate it and didn’t think it was that bad, though we all agreed it was not quite molten.  JP has been there other times when it’s been really good, so this was probably just a mistake on the part of the kitchen.

BlindBaker ordered a cannoli…

And a cream puff.  I’m sure she’ll chime in with her thoughts!

VSa ordered the napoleon.  BlindBaker also took notes on how she felt (I was total FAIL that day!), so hopefully she chimes in again with that ;)

I ordered the individual strawberry shortcake pastry.  Ginormously tall, super fluffy, airy…

IMG_4440.JPG

Yeah, I’d say I liked mine.  Airy spongecake, strawberry flavor popping through, and whipped cream – which may not be ‘traditional’ strawberry shortcake, but I like the airy, light cake.  This was pretty good and I suppose my new dessert at Veniero’s.  Sadly, though, good strawberry shortcake is way more common than good tiramisu, so this is not really a reason to visit Veniero’s alone.

Yvo says: Sure, Veniero’s continues to offer quality pastries (for the most part, barring kitchen mishaps and minus getting rid of the tiramisu cup, grrr).  But I want that tiramisu cup back.  BRING BACK THE TIRAMISU CUP!!!

  1. I remember both JP and VSa saying the napoleon was really good (and it was, ’cause VSa let me have a bite of hers) but the top puff pastry layer was really tough to cut into. It wasn’t like they expected it to shatter into a million pieces, it was more like it just wouldn’t break apart at all.

My cream puff wasn’t bad. The filling was fluffy, light, and lightly sweetened, which I appreciated greatly. The puff itself was a little tough, like the raw cream puff dough (choux paste) had been worked a little too much before baking. More likely, it had been sitting in the pastry case for a while. Whatever the reason, it didn’t have much snap to it. I liked it well enough though.

I was a little frightened by the shamrock-green citron bits in the cannoli filling. As with the cream puff, the cannoli shell was kind of tough, but it did have a nice flavor and of my two desserts, I liked the cannoli best. If only those green citron pieces weren’t visible from outer space…

This place had one of the best cupcakes ever. That molten chocolate cake looks absolutely insane though! Thanks for posting.
