I stopped by Veronica’s Kitchen recently looking for some comforting food. I tried to order the beef stew, but they were out! So I tried to order … well, it doesn’t matter, because at 1:20 pm, they were out of everything but jerk chicken and curry chicken. My coworker told me a few times how spicy the jerk chicken was, so I opted for the curry chicken (I was pointed to the hot sauces on the ledge outside the cart when I asked if it was spicy; I laughed “No, I don’t want spicy food!” and the guy smiled at me). Right after I’d ordered, the guy behind me ordered jerk chicken, and just like that, they were also out of jerk chicken. By 1:20 pm!!! Popular cart, I’d say!
I wasn’t sure what Caribbean/Jamaican curry would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised. I got it over rice with cabbage/veggies on the side, and this cost $5.50. So cheap and filling! It wasn’t quite what I want from a curry, but it was really tasty and a ton of food. Two drumsticks and a chicken thigh are in that messy looking picture. The meat fell right off the bones as I used a plastic fork to pick at it slightly, eating the juicy, tender meat with bites of rice and vegetables. Really quite yummy, though I am not sure I would order this again. It was a touch too mild – I don’t mean in heat, I mean in flavor – for my tastebuds. More zazz or something, I don’t know what. Maybe that’s how Caribbean/Jamaican curry is supposed to be?
Yvo says: I’m definitely going to continue trying other items at this cart to explore the cuisine – I also found another, much larger truck that serves similar fare in the opposite direction. Will report on that as time progresses. I like this cart a lot though – the operation is smooth running, with one person taking orders, one person filling orders quickly, and a third person, outside the cart, taking the money. Very efficient and fast.
