Bento Reboot

September 3, 2013 by Feisty Foodie 26 Comments

I began bento’ing in July 2007, to fight the onset of depression. It helped marginally and also helped me lose 17 lbs in roughly 3 months – portion control really works, who knew? And by making my lunches colorful with lots of variety, I kept my lunch interesting where I didn’t feel like I was restricting myself in any manner.

Most of all, I felt like someone loved me. Even though that someone was “just” me – well, I’m the most important one, aren’t I?

Nearly 6 years later, I am back to regularly packing bento (3-5x a week). I haven’t been blogging them – have just been micro-blogging them on Instagram – but have been wondering if I should restart my site, ALL MY BENTO ARE BELONG TO ME, or if I should just post them here on Feisty Foodie.

What do y’all think?

Here’s what posts would generally look like – let me know if you think they belong here or on their own site.

A delicious, filling, healthy salad by Chef Gubs: potatoes, hard boiled egg, oil poached oyster mushrooms, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, sugar snaps, lightly pickled onion, Romaine lettuce.

Another salad by Gubs: roasted mushrooms, hard boiled egg, pickled onions, mixed greens, grape tomatoes and cheese.

Roasted mushrooms, Romaine lettuce, oil brined olives,  grape tomatoes, potatoes, and tonnato dressing (not shown).

Chef-made blood sausage, fried potatoes, quick-kraut, pickled onions, slaw and tonnato dressing.

Busting out my lunch sets from the bento days!

Romaine lettuce with a simple and delicious lemon vinaigrette; chef-made prosciutto, tomatoes, sugar snaps, mango & persimmon… and a small pudding cup on the side.

So yes, posts will probably be a week at a time (after the fact), with a bit of description – and if history indeed repeats itself, maybe a bit of blather about my week. Maybe some recipes. Not really sure just yet!

What do you think? Yay or nay on posting bento here on Feisty Foodie?

I’d love for you to resurrect your Bento site. Even if you just post a photo and quick description of what it is!

Is there a reason you prefer to have it separate? Just curious.

I’m lazy. I’d like to consolidated to one site on The Feisty Foodie.

Do you use an RSS feed reader, or do you click to each site separately? Because that would explain you saying you’re lazy.

I think that bringing back your blog would be a great way for your followers/fellow bento lovers to see all of the archives on your old site and really understand the kind of dedication you had for making your bentos. I love Feisty Foodie, but I feel like the bento blog had a wonderful personal touch that gave us a little window into your kitchen adventures and every day life. No matter what you end up doing, we’re all going to read and enjoy!

Thanks, Brittany! The archives are still there… but you do raise a good point. The bento blog, because it was updated daily, became a mix of my lunch + my daily thoughts, which posts about my lunch would likely tend towards anyway – though today’s post less so, since I was trying to get it together quickly and these lunches are from over 2 months ago. Then again, I won’t be posting it daily, so maybe less of my thoughts as well?

Not sure… but thank you for weighing in!

Thanks, Debbie! I will definitely be posting my bento somewhere – Instagram, my old site (which you can look through the archives for ideas – http://feistybento.blogspot.com) – or just adding them here. Just not sure which yet…

I would love to see you posting your Bento lunches again! I think they should be a regular feature on the Feisty Foodie blog. I understand that maintaining multiple blogs can be a bit of a hassle, especially for busy folks.

I would like them to be a regular feature. Having separate blogs can be confusing and also I love your memoir posts and sometimes your wonderful memories might overlap with issues pertaining to various bentos…

Thanks, Chewthefat! That’s a good point. I do have a lot of food memories that relate to having food prepared for me as a child 🙂

I would love to see more of your bentos! They feel so much more special and fun than the usual packed lunches and i know i could use some inspiration.
I would say if you have the time and energy to maintain two blogs then you should relook at your caffinee intake ;))
I’ll read regardless of where you post

Do as you wish, you know I will read both! I think you serve a greater audience by having two sites as those looking specifically for bento would find that blog – but then again you tag your posts so they would probably find them here too. What the hell do i know? Except I love ya’ and will read anything you write, anywhere.

I love that you are bento-ing again. Awesome.

I think the kids at HS [in our new town] would faint if I sent Wallene in with bento. They would be all, like, “Whaaaat?” I kid. They are a great group of kids, but as one of them said today “Yep, you move here and your IQ falls 5 points. After that it’s your fault.” Gawd I love living here. 🙂
