Lunch: Avocado with Tuna

September 14, 2012 by Feisty Foodie 16 Comments

Avocado w Tuna 01.jpgI took this photo months ago – yes, it’s still from before the hiatus – and was really pleased with the way my lunch tasted. It was high quality tinned tuna (yes, such a thing exists) scooped into the hollow part of half an avocado (that I’d scored to make it easier to eat), with some fresh lime and cilantro (which I adore). It was a simple, quick, healthy and delicious lunch.

The inspiration for this simple lunch was actually this radio commercial that I shockingly can’t find online. (It must be out there and I’m not doing a good job looking; everything is on the internet. Everything.) However, though the commercial inspired me to make this, it actually upsets me every single time I listen to it.

It starts off with a man asking a woman if she’d like to grab lunch with him and a couple of their other coworkers. She declines, saying she bought a whole bunch of avocados this week, and he jokingly asks if that’s her way of asking for a raise. She explains that no, she made tuna salad and was going to eat it with the avocado, and presumably shows him her lunch. He proceeds to say “Hey, that looks great! Can I try that?” and eats her entire lunch.

As if that’s not bad enough, she doesn’t say anything beyond “hey!” when he initially takes it, but then (as it’s radio, you can’t really tell) sits there and watches him eat her lunch. After that, he compliments her on her cooking (“it’s not even cooking. It’s tuna salad,” she tells him flatly), and she gets up and starts to leave. He asks her, “Hey, where are you going?”

She responds, “To go get lunch.”

There is SO much wrong with this commercial, where do I even begin?! I don’t take it as a sexist thing, though I described to a friend the frustration and anger I feel whenever this commercial plays, and my friend said something about gender roles (um, what?). Let’s work backwards.

She’s going to get lunch, and… she didn’t say “and you’re paying, jerkface.”

She doesn’t stop him from eating her lunch… she lets him take it or hands it over to try…??? Ummm, please don’t touch my food. That’s gross. You want to see? SEE WITH YOUR EYES AND NOT WITH YOUR HANDS.

HE ATE HER ENTIRE LUNCH.

He didn’t apologize!

HE ATE HER ENTIRE LUNCH!!!

What is WRONG with him?!

I seriously get so agitated thinking about it! I have to stop.

But seriously.

HE ATE HER ENTIRE LUNCH!!! IN FRONT OF HER!!!

No wonder there are scummy lunch thieves who go in office fridges and eat other people’s food…

Anytime! Play around with it – the “recipe” is infinitely customizable to your own tastes!

I saw this amazing thing to do with a avocado. Slice thick lengthwise retaining hole in the middle where seed is. Sautee in pan. Crack egg in hole. Sunny side up egg with avocado!!!

I saw that too – but I’m not all that much of a fan of cooked/heated avocado. It tastes… off to me. But I loved the idea!

I’ve never had cooked avocado. Guess I’ll try it one day but raw is so gooooood.

That’s how I feel about most fruits – that’s why I never do anything but eat them plain/raw/straight. Mmm, fruit. I want fruit. I wish I had a cart near me that did the sliced fruit thing… (yes I’m lazy haha)

    🙁

I bought 2 avocados on Wednesday and opened one that night to find that it was waaay too unripe. Biggest sad face ever. The second is going on my salad tonight, that is if the bastard has ripened up by now…

Does avocado continue to ripen once it’s been cut? I’ve never tried – I tend to err on the side of caution and wind up with overripe avocados more than the other way. Hopefully your avocado is ripe now 🙂

Mmm, not a bad idea, though sounds mushy… I want guacamole, avocado prices are dropping a bit (which is weird cuz the season is ending) but they aren’t nice! 🙁

Ahhh! That’s the one. Ironically, I did an event with them months ago (http://feistyfoodie.com/2012/05/16/avocado-cinco-at-fonda/) and didn’t realize it was their commercial. Hahaha. Thanks for sharing the link, Shawn!

I think they took it down by now, boo… but isn’t it such a bizarre commercial? Sorry you can’t find it :T
