SoHo Park, revisited

October 12, 2009 by Feisty Foodie 2 Comments

Recently, we returned to SoHo Park because HB wanted the burger – which she really likes – and SpB hadn’t been able to join us last time.  This time, I opted for some different dishes.

We were all hungry as we waited for AB to arrive, so we ordered fried zucchini sticks.  We were surprised by how thick the ‘sticks’ were but they were delicious!  Juicy, crunchy, and a great coating, we were all very happy.  The curried mayo it came with was interesting as well.

SpB also ordered fries to start, which we all dogged, oops sorry!  We were able to try the red pepper aioli which was good and redolent with red pepper flavor, which HB doesn’t like, but those of us who like peppers liked it just fine.

Most everyone ordered burgers, so I didn’t bother taking pictures of that – though I think everyone liked their burger just fine.  I think HB said it wasn’t as good as last time, but still good.

As for me, I opted to order the fish & chips, but switched the side of chips for

salad, cuz I’d eaten so many fries already, I was feeling a lil sick from the oil.

The fried fish was actually pretty good, thin, crispy, and fried properly, … one of the few places I’ve been in NYC where it isn’t coated in batter super thick and I just want to puke afterwards from eating too much oil.  I’d give it high marks except their tartar sauce was weak, and seeing as tartar sauce is super easy to make, I was a little annoyed by that.  I mean, come on!  The sauce practically makes fried fish good or bad.  So that kind of sucked.

The salad had a TON of carrots on top (as HB and BB both noted, while I drunkenly ate it, lol).  The balsamic dressing was pretty good though.

HB and I also opted to share an order of grilled corn, which was listed as “two pieces” – but that’s one order.  So it’s two whole ears, split into 4 pieces, which is great, except we wished we’d known that before.  We wound up sharing this with everyone – I mean, we were happy that $5.50 turned out not to be so bad, but at the same time, we’d have made sure to skip the 2nd order… Next time, I guess, because this was good, charred nicely with a smokey flavor to it.  Mine needed a little salt but was otherwise good.

Yvo says: As I said last time, I can foresee returning here with the girls; the prices are reasonable, cheap really, it isn’t hard to get a table, and the atmosphere is good to just hang out and relax, chatting away the night.  Which is what we did, really.  No one rushed us, even as we lingered post-check-paying, but then, there wasn’t much of a crowd, and no wait either.  (Which can be good and bad…)  The beers run in the $5-6 range, while cocktails are pricier at $10, but still manageable.
