Sapporo

December 8, 2006 by Feisty Foodie 4 Comments

After hearing StB and ShB talk about Sapporo many a time (they used to both work in midtown and meet up for lunch), when my best friend (who is actually in the above picture- can you find her?) suggested we go to Rockefeller Center to see the tree last Saturday, I immediately thought, “Hey, it’s going to be cold, and what’s better than noodles in soup when it’s cold?!  Nothing, I tell you!”  I’d also read good things from Zach over at Midtown Lunch, so I was a bit excited to finally be in Midtown for Lunch.  (Corny, I know…)

Of course, I conveniently forgot what any of them had said they enjoyed, so we both opted to order the Sapporo Special ramen, with pork, ground pork, fish cakes, veggies, and ramen!  The ramen was good, with a nice chew to it, and the broth was soothing.  I didn’t find the ingredients to be all that special- the pork, the fish cakes, all were only so so.  Nothing too special.  (I found the spoon a bit odd, because it was so deep, I found it a little hard to get everything I wanted!)  But I found myself, at the end, fishing around for strands of noodles.  I love noodles, I love carbs, I wanted more~

While LTS had been waiting for me, (I was only a few minutes late!  I power-walked from Williams-Sonoma at 59th & Lex, okay?!) she’d perused the reviews that were posted in the window.  One of them suggested that the gyoza were “softer than your lover’s thighs” so she insisted we order this as an appetizer.  Of course, for some reason they came after we’d received our soup, but either way, these were good but I don’t know about the description.  (I eat a fair amount of gyoza as well, since B really likes gyoza…)  They were soft, with a nice crust, but I think I’m spoiled after eating the delicious gyoza at morimoto.)  Either way, I don’t think I’d order these again for … oh, they were only $4.30.  I guess that’s not so bad!

Yvo says: All of the ramen dishes were less than $10, starting at around 6-7 (ours were $7.50 each, but I think I’d be fine with the miso ramen next time, which is $6-something).  I think this is a really good deal for a delicious lunch that isn’t completely bad for you, somewhat healthy and oh-so-soothing on a cold, blustery day (like today, which is freezing with such blasts of icy wind I just want to hide under a blanket!), especially in midtown where lunches can easily top $15 for something small and unsatisfying.  This is great for what it is: a quick lunch spot.
highly recommended for work day lunch

That brings back yummy memories of when I used to work around there. I love Sapporo…in all its simple ramenticity.
