La Maison du Chocolat

December 2, 2006 by Feisty Foodie 2 Comments

Taking my cue from a recent article in the Gothamist, during yesterday’s trip to Rockefeller Center playing at being a tourist, my best friend and I ducked into La Maison du Chocolat (The House of Chocolate sounds so much better in French, doesn’t it?) for some decadent hot chocolate. Yes, my dear readers, we paid $7 each for the above cup of chocolate (the other one is not pictured, as my best friend, LTS, snatched hers up right away, heh).

Despite the article telling us that we should enjoy our hot chocolate in the tea salon at La Maison du Chocolat, we were forced to get it to go as a sign on the counter declared that the tea salon was closed for the day. I was truly disappointed as it’d have been lovely to sit and enjoy in the store, with its wonderful smells and all the beautiful chocolate displays. When I asked the counter girl when it’d be re-opened, thinking maybe I’d come back in a week or so, she responded, “Oh, not until January, at the earliest.”

…

In any case, the chocolate itself was rich, coating our mouths with its nutty flavor, and yes, its effect lasted hours. It’s served boiling hot, though; even the double cup and some napkins wrapped around it was barely enough to allow us to hold them without burning our hands as we left the store.

Do I recommend it? It’s hard to say; if you’re really that into chocolate, and like your hot chocolate somewhat thick (some people I know truly prefer Swiss Miss made with water, so this will be absolutely disgusting to them), sure, go try this out. It’s definitely interesting. If that’s not your thing, don’t bother though. Would I get it again? Absolutely not. Too many other things to try that I’d enjoy way more, for $7 or so… (such as our lunch that day! Review to come!)

I am not a fan of chocolate…but I do LOVE hot chocolate on a cold day [yes, swiss miss is fine] – but for $7 – do NOT send me back outside. Uh….just don’t.

I appreciate how well you described how luscious this chocolate is, but I would rather drop $3.50 with a street vendor [or starbucks, gasp] for cocoa than pay that and have to leave.

    Loved the review tho.

I had one of these on an icy cold New York afternoon last year. And hey, you should try converting US$7 to Aussie pesos! lol. It was so thick and rich and very decadent.
