Roy’s

My crabcake appetizerRoy’s
Marriott Financial Center Hotel
130 Washington Street
New York, NY 10006
P: (212) 266-6262

Cuisine: Hawaiian Fusion
Price: RESTAURANT WEEK (lunch)

Yama Momma MeatloafBear in mind, this is the THIRD time I’ve been to this restaurant- once to the one in San Francisco on an expense account (and my first ever experience with a molten chocolate souffle), and twice to the one in Manhattan now (both times for Restaurant Week, once in summer ’04 and this time).  That is a LOT for me, for any of these higher end restaurants, because normally, I tend to not be inclined to return for whatever reason.  I like variety!  Trying new things!

Macadamia Nut-encrusted Niagari with a lobster butter sauceAnyway, Roy’s hasn’t disappointed me so far with anything.  We both started off with the crabcake appetizer, which was delicious as always, and then parted ways as my companion ordered the Yama Momma Meatloaf and I went with the Macadamia Nut-crusted Niagari with a lobster butter sauce.  Put it this way: delicious.  My fish was super tender and flavorful, with the sauce complementing the sweetness of this fish beautifully (I’d never had Niagari- nor even heard of it- before).  My companion happily munched away on her meatloaf, so I think it’s safe to say that she enjoyed her meal at least as much as I did (on top of which, this was her second time there and second time ordering the meatloaf, so it’s a very safe assumption that the meatloaf is incredible).

Milk Chocolate Banana GateauAs for dessert, I was a bit disappointed that instead of the molten chocolate souffles, the only option was a milk chocolate banana gateau, but when it arrived, I forgot about the souffle and dug in happily.  The cake was harder than we both expected, as we struggled to cut into it with our spoons, but it was well worth it as the smooth mellow taste of the banana intermixed with the sweetness of the milk chocolate and the warm caramel sauce on the side.

Yvo says: Definitely go here.  I think their normal prices may be a bit expensive, but the food is well worth it, pleasing to the palate AND the eye.  I haven’t been disappointed yet by any dishes there.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  (Especially if you like seafood.)
