Ravioli Fair

A while back, someone on Midtown Lunch mentioned this “Ravioli Fair” cart next to Gloria’s Mexican.  There was a lot of back & forth, including Daniel Krieger going there and not liking his sandwich (so he never posted about it), and someone else mentioning how it used to be awesome, and blah, blah, blah, until one of the new Downtown Correspondents went there and raved, positively raved about the lasagna.  Lasagna?  I was having a pretty shitty day, if I recall correctly, when I headed over to grab a plate.  (I must have been - this many carbs for lunch means [...]

J/M/Z Rice Noodle Cart

On a recent run to Chinatown during my lunch break, I noticed this cart outside the J/M/Z train station (on Centre between Canal and Walker), serving what I’ve always considered breakfast cart food (Chinese) – rice noodles with dried shrimp, fish balls, tripe, congee, ooh they have curry squid… wow, that’s making me drool a little looking at the menu.  I got so excited – my favorite-ever dried-shrimp-rice-noodle-roll cart (I grew up eating from there; my parents took us almost every weekend) is really, really far from the train station and where I can get to from work easily.  This [...]

NYC Cravings… again

Hey look!  The NYC Cravings truck is recommended by Midtown Lunch My order of “porken” – if you request “porken” you receive both a piece of chicken and a piece of pork for the regular price.  w00t!  Love good deals!  They’d run out of rice by the time I got there but the girl working there was kind enough to scoop every last bit of rice out for me, which turned out to be enough.  Mixed with the pickled mustard greens and hey, look- a tea egg (bottom right)! – it was really good and I was really full.  I [...]

Picnick, Smoked

The hype has died down, and it’s close enough to my office that there’s no reason not to go try Picnick, Smoked.  You may recall that I really detested Picnick when I went 2 years ago.  Maybe not.  But I did… but I LOVE BBQ, so whatever.  As you can see by the above pic, there was no line when I went.  Why?  Because this was the Friday before Labor Day, and the Financial District was pretty empty.  The hype died down, the line was gone, and I could finally comfortably go – I’m sure I’ve mentioned a ton of [...]

Shirley’s Jamaican Food Cart

A while back, I was Googling something, looking for interesting, good carts in the Financial District.  I stumbled upon something that hinted at a Jamaican food cart nearby, but wound up reading about Veronica’s Kitchen on Midtown Lunch’s Downtown Lunch the next day and went there instead.  Twice.  Well, after that, I realized I quite like Jamaican food… and when I was buying Golden Rainier cherries recently, I noticed the cart that I’d read about (which wasn’t Veronica’s Kitchen) was right next to the fruit cart.  I believe it’s called Shirley’s or something, and it’s quite a lot bigger than Veronica’s. [...]
