La Nacional, Revisited

For a veryvery belated birthday dinner, I decided to take LTS to the very same place I’d taken StB for her birthday lunch.  LTS and I share a love of good paella, so it seemed fitting; when I read, just the day before we were set to go, that La Nacional was having money problems and might be closing down, I was even more eager to spend some money there.  We started with the seafood salad. While the seafood was very fresh tasting, and I loved the abundance of octopus, LTS and I agreed that the dish was less oomph [...]

After reading this rather rave review about “the best and quirkiest Spanish restaurant in New York” (emphasis mine) on Serious Eats, well, I had to go, of course.  (Click to their review for a better picture of the front… I was trying to avoid having StB in the shot, but I missed anyway and got part of her head, haha.)  I emailed StB immediately “Let’s go here,” and it was decided that for her birthday lunch, we would visit this secret spot. Before I get into the food, though, I need to share with you two important details.  First, on [...]

Sorely disappointed. After reading about the uni panini in New York Mag – wait, it gets better – StB and I decided, per usual, to try it.  Cheap eats, we thought.  Okay, so $15 for a panini isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s uni, and it’s from a tapas place.  (Am I whining?)  One of our favorite foods (seriously, search either of our sites for uni or sea urchin, you’ll see) and served in a more casual manner at a Spanish place – why not?  Sounds interesting, we’re game, and we went.  StB does a fantastic job of describing our experience [...]

Taqueria el Sombrero

I hear so many other bloggers- I’m not even going to start linking to their names, because it’s seriously way too many- talking about how Mexican food in NYC sucks and there’s no place for Mexican food but in California (or maybe Mexico, but that’s another story, I s’pose).  So on my recent trip out west, when the day of the wedding rolled around and FeistyMom and I were wandering around Healdsburg, where the wedding took place, thinking of what to eat for lunch… well, I jumped at the opportunity to go to the Mexican restaurant a few doors down [...]

As any of my regular readers (if I have any?) may have figured out, I have been not eating out that much lately.  (Hey, Cathy might even be proud!  Was that too corny?…)  Anyway, life changes, time marches on, etc. and so forth, so with some major upcoming changes in my life, well, a lot’s going on and it’s made me pretty anti-social, uninterested in going out, more interested in staring at the walls of my Manhattan apartment… or absorb myself in mindless Wii game after mindless Wii game.  I’m digressing.  It was a welcome change, therefore, last Friday when a [...]
