Salt & Fat

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.  Yes, dear friends, this is a tale of two experiences, though not quite a tale of two restaurants like Chung Moo Ro was.  I went to the same restaurant twice, and ordered just about all the same dishes, but with two very different groups of people, and had extremely different feelings.  I’m trying not to call anyone out, but I suppose some people may feel unhappy about what I’m about to say… on the bright side, they don’t read my blog, so I doubt they’ll read this.  [...]

Pelea Mexicana

For another happy hour gathering recently, my friend Cookie suggested this place she’d heard of that did all you can eat tacos from 5-7pm, Pelea Mexicana.  I rounded up the usual suspects and we rolled into the joint seven deep.  Yeah, I said “rolled into the joint seven deep” – problem?!    While we were browsing the menu, three types of salsa and a basket of crisp tortilla chips were placed in front of us.  The chips were not stale – a recent pet peeve of mine when munching on this sort of snack – and the salsas ranged in [...]

Tortilleria Nixtamal

I’ve long heard about Tortilleria Nixtamal and the fantastic tortillas made there, so I took another foray into Corona one day before a Mets game and decided to sample the wares.  When I saw horchata on the menu, I knew I had to order it.  The rice milk drink is right up my alley – cold, refreshing, and lightly ‘spiced’ with nutmeg.  I order this almost anytime I see it on the menu (exceptions are when I see other things on the menu that are higher up my “love to drink” list than horchata, obviously!).  Beer Boor wanted to try [...]

Big D’s Grub Truck

This post has been a long time coming, and I don’t know why I’ve put it off for so long.  Whoops!  A while back, I decided to run into the city and try this truck I’ve been seeing all over my friends’ Facebook feeds lately: Big D’s Grub Truck.  It happened to be parked near my friend’s office in midtown, so he joined me for lunch – and even better, this was during the week that they had a promotion for $1 off a taco platter or a sandwich if you said “CBS New York” to them.    Fun.  (Also: [...]

Cascabel Taqueria

Yep, the Upper East Side has Mexican cuisine. I’d previously enjoyed Maya greatly, so it was time to explore Cascabel Taqueria, a restaurant that takes Mexican “street food” and tweaks it just a little bit to bring it to a different, more sophisticated level. Named for the peppers that rattle when shaken, Cascabel offers a wide variety of choices using a full spectrum of meats, seafood, and vegetables, including eight different varieties of their signature tacos. The luchador theme is strong here, and a lot of fun. Who doesn’t prefer their wrestlers to be masked, anyway? We started with drinks, [...]
