I had the good fortune to be able to score tickets to Hamlet before the show closed… and I think I’ve only mentioned briefly my love of theater (watching, not participating!) here, but it is one of the things I absolutely adore about NYC. (About 4 years ago, I set out to see one show a month, and did this for about a year before it got too expensive and I’d seen nearly everything I wanted to. It was awesome.) In any case, I just read Hamlet for English class this semester (nope, I never read it before), and watching [...]

I had the good fortune of “bumping into” Brownie at the Scharffen Berger event I attended; conversation of course centered on food, and at one point, it turned to banh mi. She mentioned how she was a bit disappointed that I hadn’t liked Sau Voi during my banh mi bender; though she agreed that my sandwiches, judging by my pictures, did look disappointing, Brownie really enjoyed their banh mi sate ga (chicken). I told her I would definitely go back and try it on her recommendation – especially because it’s so close, and she really liked it, I didn’t [...]
Recipe Fridays: Homemade Banh Mi

Yep, MORE BANH MI. I am nuts about banh mi, in case you couldn’t already tell. The above was my first attempt; I went to Paris Sandwich (because I love their Paris Special banh mi best; I totally play favorites!) and picked up cha lua (pork roll), pate, Vietnamese mayo, and pickled carrots/daikon… along with one of their baguettes. Crisp, chewy, just amazing, I daresay this is the bread of my dreams. So I spread a little pate on one side, a little Vietnamese mayo on the other, topped with with the respective toppings and went to town. It [...]

Via FoodBuzz’s Tastemaker’s program, I was able to try two new types of Nature’s Pride bread recently, 12 grain and 100% whole wheat, both with no high fructose corn syrup and lots of whole grains. Via Swagapalooza, I was able to try Barney Butter, which is almond butter made in a peanut-free facility (ie, even if you’re allergic to peanuts, you can eat this stuff, since it’s not made anywhere near peanuts!). Two varieties, crunchy and smooth, though I only tried smooth. Very few ingredieans and pretty much all natural – almonds, evaporated cane juice, palm fruit oil, [...]
Num Pang

Num Pang… Cambodian sandwiches, similar to banh mi. Yes, more hype. I don’t know about $7.50 a sandwich here, but I’ve heard good things, so I was game. HB and I came here after a couple of drinks to sate our hunger. We decided to split two sandwiches, the pulled pork and the five spice glazed pork belly! Mmm, fatty pork belly. I decided to snag a root beer to go with our sandwiches. She got the Blood Orange Lemonade, which she said didn’t taste very blood-orange-y and she wasn’t too happy with because she doesn’t like lemonade [...]
