The day before Thanksgiving, I had some business to take care of in midtown west that left me hungry afterwards. Since DLS was “working from home”, we decided to meet up for ramen on the rather rainy day, at a place that Cheese had recommended to me more than a few times – Tabata Ramen. As soon as we’d ordered, small salads appeared. Tasty enough but completely unnecessary, it was a nice touch for a lunch meal. DLS ordered the shoyu ramen. I tried some of his broth and thought it was sweeter than I expected the broth to be; [...]

As I mentioned, after The Original Soup Man, I still had plans to eat lunch with TC… at Totto Ramen. This place has been hyped up for ages and ages, and the line is always super long. Even at 3pm on a Friday, we waited a good 20-30 minutes (while I ate my soup, haha!) before we were led inside the tiny space to a table. TC ordered extra spicy ramen – which comes with the hot chili oil on the side for you to add as you like. He added the entire thing and proceeded to devour it. He [...]

Recently, my Dad was in town for a meeting and invited me out to lunch. It was a nice treat since he doesn’t come into the city that much anymore since he is retired. A while back, we went to Haru Hana, one of the new “J-pubs” in Koreatown, he suggested we go back. It has been especially cold here in NYC, so I was looking forward to trying one of their soups. We started off with an order of Pork Gyoza(6 pc. for $5). They were tasty, but the filling was pretty forgettable. Everything was mashed/chopped too finely to [...]

One slightly rainy Friday, I was on the Upper East Side working my way through some blogging, when I decided I wanted ramen. A quick Google turned up Naruto, not too far away, so I walked over and waited a few minutes before I was seated at the bar. I’d wanted to try the pork katsu curry, but I was informed they were out of the pork katsu, so I switched to plain chicken. It was interesting watching them cook it, but at the same time, I was disappointed that the chicken is cooked separately and therefore doesn’t pick up a [...]
Ramen Hakata

One recent day after class, I realized I was running errands on a completely empty stomach (I didn’t pack bento!) and needed to fuel up. No shortage of options in Flushing, I was just very indecisive and finally decided to wander over to the Flushing branch of Ramen Setagaya, my favorite ramen place. I hadn’t had a chance to visit the Flushing location – actually, I’ve yet to visit any location of Setagaya besides the original, because I’m weird like that – so I made my way to Prince Street and discovered the above. Oh. It’s now Ramen Hakata. I [...]
