I love eating barbecue in New York. There’s no shortage of it here any more, but there hasn’t been decent barbecue on the Upper East Side, near home, since Pearson’s left 70th Street many years ago. So my excitement was pretty obvious when Pat and Gina Neely of Memphis, buoyed by their Food Network fame, announced a partnership with the folks behind Merchants NY to transform the restaurant on the corner of 62nd and 1st Avenue into Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, New York’s newest barbecue house. I had the opportunity with my friend, PS, to visit five days after its inaugural [...]

After the MomTrends event, FeistySis was still hungry… Since she rarely ever gets out to the city to hang out anymore (product of working in LI, living in LI, and having two kids!), I suggested we walk over a few blocks to Hill Country BBQ. However, on the walk over, she decided she’d rather go across the street from Hill Country and hit up Hog Pit NYC. Since I’d never been, I thought heck, why not? It sounded interesting, and looked like a dive/biker bar, and I’m cool with that… FeistySis had never had fried pickles before, so when I [...]
The Side Door @ Beacon: Roast Suckling Pig

I’ve documented several visits to Beacon’s lunchtime offshoot, The Side Door, in order to sample the cheeseburger, double dog, and even, yes, the Cobb salad. A new season brings change, and with that, another writeup from me. The Side Door removed the double dog (sorry, Mr. Pink!) from the menu to make room for their pulled pork creation, elaborately known as the Roast Suckling Pig Sandwich. Early reports on the new sandwich complained about its size, but owner Waldy Malouf said he’d address that, so off I walked for the opportunity to sample the new lunch option. I’m happy that [...]

About a month ago, the master of all things BBQ himself – James from The Eaten Path – asked me if I’d like to join him and some other food folks for lunch at Legends Bar: The Ranger Texas BBQ (hey, you look at that sign and you tell me what the name of the place is!). After trying unsuccessfully one Tuesday afternoon – the bar is open, but the smoker is cleaned on Tuesdays, so no ‘cue – we returned on a Friday to feast. From the outside, Legends looks like any other sports bar in the area might. [...]

Before a recent Midtown Lunch Happy Hour, a bunch of us gathered at Daisy May’s for dinner. Just an avenue away from the happy hour spot, some of us pigs wanted food before the drinking commenced… so we found ourselves 6, then 8 strong at the large tables in the back. (Please excuse the unfocused photos. I was the recipient of a brand new camera, and am still learning my way around the controls. Sorry!)I decided to share food with BeerBoor, who told me that the Memphis dry rubbed ribs were excellent here. I have to admit that while the meat [...]
