John Brown Smokehouse

After I posted about John Brown Smokehouse many months ago, my friends really wanted to go check it out. After a false start, we rescheduled for just after the New Year, and traveled 4 strong to the remote location in Long Island City. Coincidentally, we were there the same night Frommers was there checking it out… Dean way over-ordered; cole slaw, burnt ends, lamb chops, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, collards… We each got our own trays overflowing with food, but since I hadn’t yet tried the mac & cheese, I took a photo of TC’s m&c and tried a bite.  [...]

Da Kitchen

One of my dearest friends – known to y’all on my blog simply as StB – recently got married in Maui, Hawaii. There was no way I was going to miss this for the world, so I took myself on a week long trip… read along as I share everything I ate on this incredible vacation!  On my last day in Hawaii, most people had left already, back home to reality after a week in Paradise… but RC and MY were doing things the other way and spending the week after the wedding in Hawaii instead.  The day before, we’d [...]

Bullock’s Barbecue

My next adventure in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill found me in Durham.  For the entire time I’ve known Beer Boor, he’s spoken fondly of having gone to Duke – which is in Durham – and of Bullock’s Barbecue.  Understand that while I am a Northerner through and through, I’ve often lamented that I am a Southern girl trapped in a Northern state & body.  I adore my southern cuisine along with all that it encompasses, which includes, of course, genuine ‘cue.  Holy smack, do I love my fried foods, butter, and… barbecue.  Yes’m.  So it was a no-brainer to me that I [...]

Corner Burger

I found myself in Brooklyn for food again recently – apparently, the way to get me to go to Brooklyn is proffer a Groupon; so Corner Burger was the destination. The lure? POUTINE.  TWELVE DIFFERENT WAYS. My dining companion ordered a burger topped with pickled jalapenos, roasted red peppers, chipotle sauce and pepperjack cheese. But to start, we went with fried pickles. Piping hot when they arrived, once they’d cooled down a bit, had a great crunch to them. The breading was a little weak, but I found these pleasant enough to munch on and dip in the accompanying ranch [...]

Neely’s Barbecue Parlor

I love eating barbecue in New York. There’s no shortage of it here any more, but there hasn’t been decent barbecue on the Upper East Side, near home, since Pearson’s left 70th Street many years ago. So my excitement was pretty obvious when Pat and Gina Neely of Memphis, buoyed by their Food Network fame, announced a partnership with the folks behind Merchants NY to transform the restaurant on the corner of 62nd and 1st Avenue into Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, New York’s newest barbecue house. I had the opportunity with my friend, PS, to visit five days after its inaugural [...]
