I recently flew to San Francisco – one of my very favorite domestic cities - to attend the 2nd Annual Foodbuzz Fest (here’s last year’s write-up). Follow along for the next two weeks as I recap my weekend trip! Directly after the farewell brunch, I headed back to our hotel and settled out the bill, packed up again all neatly since I had to check my luggage – um, a big scary knife made an appearance in the swag bag – and then walked over to Turtle Tower. Since the first time I went to Turtle Tower a year ago, I [...]

I keep talking about Pho Bang but every time I’ve posted about it, I managed to have ordered the bun (cold vermicelli salad bowls). On this day, after visiting a sick relative at Elmhurst Hospital, FeistySis suggested Pho Bang and FeistyMom and I quickly agreed – it’s really very close by. FeistySis ordered the pho, and consented to let me photograph her bowl of 22 regular (pho tai), which is just pho with regular beef eye of round slices (the soup is so hot that if you plunge the thin slices into the broth, they cook immediately). Quickly, before she noticed or [...]

Directly following my trip to Peru, I left on a research trip to the West Coast for two weeks. What was I researching? Glad you asked: a book on Stadium Eats! Um, yeah, without a book deal in sight currently (hint, hint, anyone reading this who is interested!), I went to preemptively scout out the 6 West Coast stadiums and eat my way up and down the West Coast at the same time, starting in San Francisco, working my way down to Los Angeles, then San Diego, back up to San Francisco and then to Seattle! Phew! Tune in at [...]

Cold weather calls for pho, I don’t know many people who would disagree. (Maybe people who never had pho before? Well, actually, the BF disagrees, but that’s an entirely different matter…) So when the weather got a lil chilly a short while ago (and little did we know it would soon get even colder!!!), the Spicy Ninja and I headed off to check out this place his friend recommended – Pho Grand, on, well, Grand Street. We were seated immediately, as the place wasn’t very busy, and decided to start off with an order of summer rolls, to split. I [...]

During dinner with my cousin & his wife, I mentioned that I was open for suggestions as to what to eat the next day. My cousin’s wife told me about Turtle Tower and northern style pho, which apparently is markedly different from southern style pho and much more rare. She said that it didn’t contain star anise, and the resulting broth was incredibly clean, simple, and amazing. Of course I had to hit up the place and see what was what! Amusingly, the place was packed when I first entered, but I was told to head out of the restaurant [...]
