Viet Royale – Falls Church, VA

During my trip to DC, I noticed on the Metro map that there was a stop called “Falls Church”. I don’t know much about the DC metro area, but I did know that Falls Church was home to a large Vietnamese population and boasted some really delicious pho and banh mi as I’ve heard… so I got really excited and suggested we drive there before visiting the National Air & Space Museum and then leaving for NYC. It all worked out in terms of proximity… I always start with an order of summer rolls, because I like these better than [...]

Tuesdays with TT: Baoguette/Pho Sure

One restaurant that has been on our “List” for a while now is Baoguette/Pho Sure in the West Village. CT had been a number of times in the past and was long overdue for a return visit. I have been to a couple of the Baoguette locations over the years and really enjoyed their banh mi. Believe it or not, I had never had pho before. While there is an on-going debate on whether NYC has good pho, I value CT’s opinion and she said it was pretty good there. Ramen has become quite the craze over the past couple [...]

Pho Tay Ho

As I mentioned, my friend’s husband grew up in Montreal… but he’s also Vietnamese, so when he mentioned his favorite pho place, I knew we had to go – especially given how much I love pho. Plates of fresh chiles were on each table.  No, I didn’t eat any of these.  (Even though – exciting news! I have been eating spicy food lately and enjoying it. Flavor and heat without burning my face off!) The usual sauce station, though note that there’s a small bottle of fish sauce as well!  The summer rolls are ordered by the piece, which I [...]

ChaPa’s

One of those super rainy days in December, I told DLS I felt like eating pho… that Vietnamese noodle soup that to me, is just about the best thing you can eat on a cold rainy day.  I realized that though CheeeeEEEEse has mentioned ChaPa’s many times as being his new pho place since moving to the neighborhood, I’d yet to try it, so I decided we should go there – right down the block from Totto Ramen.  (Even on this crazy rainy night where it poured to the point we were both soaked walking 10 blocks, the line was [...]

Thai Son

One recent afternoon, I went to meet up with James of The Eaten Path and another friend for some barbecue, but due to unforeseen circumstances (they were closed to clean the smoker), we wound up wandering Jackson Heights before we decided on pho.  We walked into Thai Son, which wasn’t crowded… which is my friend TC’s favorite place for pho.  We often argue with each other over whose pho place is better, mine – Pho Bang – or his, Thai Son.  The menu was pretty straightforward, so I ordered the dish that most closely approximated what I order at Pho Bang [...]
