BeerBoor in Portland: Kenny & Zuke’s

While this was my second trip to Portland, my first trip was exactly one afternoon and evening, during which we drank at Bailey’s, ate at Kenny & Zuke’s, and drank at Full Sail and, I’m told, other places. I really hadn’t seen much of the city at all, but I remembered eating well. So, one order of business was to eat at Kenny & Zuke’s again. I’d stuffed myself on some quality fried chicken that first visit, and, having missed the “famous” pastrami, vowed to right that wrong. But first, an aside. One order of business in Portland was to [...]

Stage Deli

I work in Midtown, and count a number of under-$10 lunch spots among my favorites. But special occasions call for special plans. My birthday and my work anniversary coincide, and I’ve made it a bit of a ritual to enjoy Stage Deli once a year to provide a money-is-no-object celebratory lunch. Stage is definitely a tourist destination. Lunchtime crowds pack into the classic Jewish deli for their wide, wide assortment of kosher sandwiches, soups, and other tasty treats. It ranks with Carnegie Deli as one of the most-visited eateries in Midtown. I’m pretty sure I don’t count as a tourist, [...]

Ben’s Best – Delivery & A Challenge!

Sometimes I get sick.  I hate when I’m sick.  I really do, because I live alone and take care of myself and sometimes when I’m sick I get completely, thoroughly fed up with my whininess (internal as it may be)… and because I seem to get one of two kinds of sick: the more prevalent one, I believe because of all that I do choose to consume, is tummy troubles.  Can’t eat.  Blegh.  Haaate that.  The other kind requires a special diet of just soup, soothing-to-my-throat, no fried foods, less oil, and basically, mostly bland foods… because I can’t talk.  [...]

Pastrami Queen

What to do when you have a ton of food in the apartment, but you don’t really want to prepare any of it? Why, you order in of course. Taking advantage of Seamlessweb on a Sunday night, my dining companion and I ordered, just in the nick of time, from Pastrami Queen, a storefront near the subway station a couple blocks away from home. It was getting near closing time, so we hurriedly placed our order and waited the 20-30 minutes. I’d heard about Pastrami Queen from a pastrami “newbie”, who has yet to visit some of the obvious go-tos [...]

RUB BBQ

I’m a strange bird.  A place can be on my list for quite a while, for whatever reason, and for no solid, real reason will it jump to the very top.  And so I found myself at RUB BBQ one slightly rainy night… Weirdly enough, I used to take dance classes across the street once a week for about 6 months, but I never managed to cross the street and try it, though this night, I got up off my couch and dragged my lazy butt into the city to have dinner with a friend.   I’m a sucker for wings, and appetizers, and fried foods, [...]
