La Maison du Chocolat – Summer Collection

I recently had the fabulous good fortune to be invited to La Maison du Chocolat on the Upper East Side to sample the launch of their Summer Collection.  Notably, their Chiberta collection, with adorable artwork adorning the boxes.  Isn’t that cute? And of course you can get big gift collections with the Chiberta as well!  As soon as I walked in, on my left was this little table featuring the Salvador raspberry mousse cake.  What a welcome! This mousse cake was light and airy, so chocolatey without being too heavy.  I could definitely eat the whole cake myself, though I [...]

Lily O’Brien’s (Macarons)

About a month ago, I headed into the city to take care of some business (read: go on an interview of sorts).  After my interview, I went to bid Matsugen farewell, had a lovely lunch, then continued northwards to Convivio for dinner with the ladies of FBM.  Yes, you read that right: I went to two different restaurants in one day that both wound up closing a few days later (one expected, one completely unexpected).  In any case, on my way to Convivio, I met up with TC, who decided to buy me a congratulatory treat because…I got the job!  [...]

bisous ciao

Post-brunch at Wallse found us wandering over to the LES for macarons.  StB’s friend had told her about a place she’d enjoyed that had salted caramel macarons, and StB wanted to buy me a box.  All hail the candy corn macaron… Halloween was the next day, and there was a limited time special flavor of candy corn.  The bag they give you is adorable. The box is cute too.Pecan caramel, candy corn, dark chocolate, espresso, gianduja and salted caramel, all lined up…I didn’t take any cross section photos because I wasn’t really sure I would be posting about these, except now [...]

This past Sunday I was dispatched, on short notice, to attend the UnFancy Food Show, a celebration of Brooklyn’s food scene. It moved this year to the Bell House, a spacious venue near the Gowanus Canal. On this blisteringly hot day, dozens of vendors were set up inside and a few more, under tents, set up shop on the sidewalk in front. I headed into the air-conditioned space, paid my $5 entrance fee, and took stock of my surroundings. Most of the vendors were in a back room, in three cramped aisles, and I believe half of Brooklyn was there [...]

Macaron Day 2010

This week, I took a break from reviewing beer for a very good reason: macarons! Not the coconut-laden drop cookies; those are macaroons. No, I’m talking about the French sandwich cookies that come in dozens upon dozens of flavors. When FeistyFoodie told me about Macaron Day, I had no choice but to visit New York City’s bakeries and try them all myself.     This year, thirteen of New York’s finest bakeries took a page from their Parisian counterparts March 20 and held their first Macaron Day. Celebrating this classic French sandwich cookie confection here were Almondine Bakery in DUMBO [...]
