Back in March, during National Hamburger Day, or Week, or Month (I had no idea it was a “thing”) Groupon featured a ton of burger joints — sadly not the Burger Joint — offering half-price certificates, and I scooped up a bunch. Only one restaurant was in my area, so of course I snatched up that deal. Burger Zone opened last September, to no fanfare. Why they decided to open on Second Avenue, just a horrible place to own a business right now thanks to the current subway construction, is a mystery to me. But there they are, four tables, [...]

After we were done shopping at the outlets (more Yvo shopping, me looking), we made our way back to the city. It was rush hour, so it took a lot longer to get back than on the way there. Before heading back to the city, I figured it would be a good opportunity to check out one of Yvo’s local restaurants that she always raves about. Although I had steak for lunch, the holiday season is a good reason to eat badly. I decided I was in the mood for Jewish deli, so onto Ben’s Best we went. Yvo says: [...]

Sometimes I get sick. I hate when I’m sick. I really do, because I live alone and take care of myself and sometimes when I’m sick I get completely, thoroughly fed up with my whininess (internal as it may be)… and because I seem to get one of two kinds of sick: the more prevalent one, I believe because of all that I do choose to consume, is tummy troubles. Can’t eat. Blegh. Haaate that. The other kind requires a special diet of just soup, soothing-to-my-throat, no fried foods, less oil, and basically, mostly bland foods… because I can’t talk. [...]

I live in a neighborhood that is heavily populated with Bukharian Jews. I don’t really know what that means, except that sometimes, when I walk home from the bus stop or train station at night, my senses are often assaulted with the amazing scent of grilled meats. I die a little inside every time, knowing how scared I am to wander into the place closest to my apartment, because whenever I walk by, the newspaper-lined windows blocking my view, and attempt to glance into the sometimes-open doorway… it seems more like a big gathering of family and friends than a [...]

The day I posted a review of Ben’s Best (finally) – literally, that very day – Jacquie alerted me to this video over at Food Curated. Apparently, I missed out on a bunch of dishes, so I went back that very night to order that which I’d missed the first few times… The pickles and slaw that come to the table when you sit down, nom. First order of business: matzoh ball soup, which came in this giant cup labeled “Rx Jewish Penicillin” – heh. I’ll admit here that I’m a terrible New Yorker, as I’d never had matzoh ball before that [...]
