Rubirosa

My darling KC, one of my very favorite people in the world, had only one birthday request: “I want pizza.”  Easy enough, I gave her a list from which to pick, and Rubirosa came up the winner.  The menu tantalized her for weeks beforehand; every other day I received a new message with another suggestion for something she wanted to eat there, and I agreed – the menu looked like it was tailored entirely to the things she likes to eat.  I was excited.  Since we were a group of six, and the small pies came with 6 slices each, [...]

Otto – Birthday 2011

Having a birthday means eating lots of good food with good friends.  The Monday of my birthday week this year, TC planned a group dinner for me at one of my favorite casual places in New York – I’ve eaten here a handful of times, which is something of a record high for me for this style of restaurant.  I just really enjoy the atmosphere, the laidback attitude, the reasonable prices… And I love introducing people to this place.  Surprisingly, on this night, three of our group of six had never been before, one hadn’t been in years, and then [...]

Tuesdays with TT: il labortorio del gelato

After our disappointing dessert at Lina Frey and the immense popularity of a nearby ice cream place, CT and I decided to check it out for ourselves. It turned out that just down the block, across from Katz’s, was il labortorio del gelato. It definitely looked like some sort of laboratory. It was so clean and sanitized in there. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a big menu listing all of their flavors. We had to scrutinize the tiny tags in front of the serving tubs while we were on line. The line moved quick so it didn’t give us much chance [...]

Otto (FBM Cookie Swap 2010)

You can’t celebrate good times, good friends, good conversation without good food.  You just can’t, not in my world.  And so it was that the first ever [females of] FBM Holiday Cookie Swap was organized (and I assure you, there will be an FBM Cookie Swap 2011, if I’ve anything to do with it!), and Otto was chosen for both its proximity to BlindBaker’s workplace and its wonderful, delicious food (diligent readers may realize that the end of 2009/beginning of 2010 saw me at Otto more times than I generally go to a place, marking it as a favorite immediately).  [...]

Cheesesteak Chowdown (Philadelphia)

I appear to have an intensely masochistic side, don’t I?  Unfortunately, as I am the bearer of the brunt of all the pain I create, I believe that makes me a bit of a sado-masochist.  As regular readers of this blog will know, I love the Mets.  I’m a baseball fan, but my allegiance lays firmly with the Mets.  (I did root for the Yankees in the last World Series, and don’t see this as a conflict; New York is my home, and my team didn’t make it.  Period.)  I have this intense desire to visit every MLB stadium there [...]
